State Park Nature / Park
An island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Ilha Grande is known for its scenic beauty. Largely undeveloped and entirely off limit to cars, the only way for you to explore the island is on foot. Over 150 km (93 mi) of hiking trails criss-cross the lush, untouched rain forest, connecting the handful of small coastal settlements with the tropical beaches, mountain peaks, and waterfalls. One of the most pristine remnants of Brazil's Atlantic rainforest, Ilha Grande holds some of the largest remaining populations of many endangered species, including the red-ruffed fruitcrow, the brown howler monkey, the maned sloth, the red-browed Amazon parrot, and the broad-snouted caiman. The waters surrounding the island feature a unique convergence of tropical, subtropical, and temperate-zone marine life, where you can observe corals and tropical fish alongside penguins and Southern right whales. Where to stay in Angra Dos Reis

While there are plenty of accommodations in Angra dos Reis itself, the industrialized township serves best as a stopover point for travel, rather than a destination in itself. Look for lodging a few kilometers outside of town, where you'll find any number of laid-back beach resorts in pristine settings. The coast just north of town offers hotels and dive resorts, while the seafront to the south brims with beach resorts and eco lodges. You can also stay on Ilha Grande, just a short ferry ride from the main township, to immerse yourself in Brazilian island life.

  • Very calm place with probably the best coffee we encountered during our stay in Brasil. Tavern/restaurant Mandela offered simple but tasty Brazilian food.  more »
  • Absolutely stunning. Lovely locals, always up for a chat and a laugh. Nature and tracks are beautiful! BUT!!! Since the island feels so extremely safe. It's easy to let your guard down. Nevertheless. ...  more »

  • A simple and small marina of a fishing village. No big deal, without much to comment
