Ilha Grande, Angra Dos Reis

An island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Ilha Grande is known for its scenic beauty. Largely undeveloped and entirely off limit to cars, the only way for you to explore the island is on foot. Over 150 km (93 mi) of hiking trails criss-cross the lush, untouched rain forest, connecting the handful of small coastal settlements with the tropical beaches, mountain peaks, and waterfalls. One of the most pristine remnants of Brazil's Atlantic rainforest, Ilha Grande holds some of the largest remaining populations of many endangered species, including the red-ruffed fruitcrow, the brown howler monkey, the maned sloth, the red-browed Amazon parrot, and the broad-snouted caiman. The waters surrounding the island feature a unique convergence of tropical, subtropical, and temperate-zone marine life, where you can observe corals and tropical fish alongside penguins and Southern right whales. • Nature is your fullness. The sea meets with the freshwater River, the Black Beach is unmissable in spite of all the many others that exist around the island. Domestic and foreign tourists have fun. Some basic details to stop are the lack of chairs and guard are inside the Park, you have to take whatever they want to wear or eat. Street vendors are not allowed. But in some places they are there. There are tracks for all the beaches but also water taxis can go and come from many different places on each day that you're there.

  • The beaches are very beautiful. Just rent a boat and take a walk along the beaches. Transparent sea and lots of marine life.

  • limpid, crystalline sea, forests preserved, best beaches, at last, a true paradise that deserves to be known.

  • Local marina where restaurants and shops are close by. A good mix of local and tourist people.

  • Nice little place, expensive for for options though
  • nice
  • Total disorganization for those who've been on the island and even worse for those who are coming for the first time. There is no indicative boards, schedules are changed without notice.

Where to stay in Angra Dos Reis

While there are plenty of accommodations in Angra dos Reis itself, the industrialized township serves best as a stopover point for travel, rather than a destination in itself. Look for lodging a few kilometers outside of town, where you'll find any number of laid-back beach resorts in pristine settings. The coast just north of town offers hotels and dive resorts, while the seafront to the south brims with beach resorts and eco lodges. You can also stay on Ilha Grande, just a short ferry ride from the main township, to immerse yourself in Brazilian island life.
