Ilha Grande, Angra Dos Reis

(4.5/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
An island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Ilha Grande is known for its scenic beauty. Largely undeveloped and entirely off limit to cars, the only way for you to explore the island is on foot. Over 150 km (93 mi) of hiking trails criss-cross the lush, untouched rain forest, connecting the handful of small coastal settlements with the tropical beaches, mountain peaks, and waterfalls. One of the most pristine remnants of Brazil's Atlantic rainforest, Ilha Grande holds some of the largest remaining populations of many endangered species, including the red-ruffed fruitcrow, the brown howler monkey, the maned sloth, the red-browed Amazon parrot, and the broad-snouted caiman. The waters surrounding the island feature a unique convergence of tropical, subtropical, and temperate-zone marine life, where you can observe corals and tropical fish alongside penguins and Southern right whales. • Try to make the trail that goes around the island by foot. Is an adventure of 2 to 4 days depending on the steep but worth it!

  • Absolutely stunning. Lovely locals, always up for a chat and a laugh. Nature and tracks are beautiful! BUT!!! Since the island feels so extremely safe. It's easy to let your guard down. Nevertheless. ...  more »

  • Local marina where restaurants and shops are close by. A good mix of local and tourist people.
  • Nice little place, expensive for for options though

  • Arrival point, always exciting, wait for the boat to pull over so I could explore the island or wait for the shipment to places that only get to by boat

  • I think a good place because it meets the needs of people who are getting to the big island.
