Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros, Alto Paraiso de Goias

4.8
#1 of 63 in Parks in State of Goias
Gorges that call to you with the sweet sound of a shallow river and eye-popping waterfalls that drown the river out with their powerful descent; all of it is at Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros. This is also the home of Moon Valley with its scooped rock formations that create natural water slides. In fact, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site in 2001, so the 1.8 billion year old forest will be protected for all time. The protected land hosts thousands of visitors each year, but the wilderness is expansive enough that you may never see them. Wear your best hiking shoes, a pair that handle both dirt paths and rocky passages, and bring snacks and water for the trek. Consider shacking up in nearby Sao Jorge where the inns are simple and clean, and the locals are friendly. • Be aware that there are only 2 hikes in the actual park. All the other waterfalls, etc. are outside the park and cost money to get in because they are on private land. In addition, most online prices ...  more »
  • The walk in the Park is something unmissable and unforgettable. The trails are very well marked, you can do it without a guide. We did the trail of canyons on the first day and another day the trail of leaps and Rapids. I went with my husband, without Guide, we have more than 50 years, but it was quiet. It takes a little bit of fitness, but calmly, enjoying the whole landscape, photographing everything, we can make both tracks. It's challenging, but it's worth it. The landscapes are amazing! We were in January, hot sun, we were lucky to not get rain and still get some excerpts with cloudy weather which helped a lot. The Canyon is too beautiful, the trail has many stretches plans, and at the end has a well for bath. The descent to carioquinha requires a little more because it has very steep sections, but if you don't make it down you still have the option to enjoy it. The trail of the jumps is more steep, requires more of the legs, the way it's always downhill and on the back a lot of ascent, but nothing that you can't do with a few rest stops. In the back going through the rapids is a must, very nice location, beautiful baths. Essential to bring water to moisturize and light foods, we take slim cereals, not to weigh in bag, essential also sunscreen, insect repellent and hat. Ideal for a day of pause between a track and another to replenish your energy. In the most is to take advantage of everything: landscapes, baths, cerrado, flowers, some seriemas, anyway ... a real nature bath! Unforgettable!
