Tvrdos Monastery, Trebinje
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Taste wines made in the centuries-long monastic tradition at Tvrdos Monastery. Legend has it that the 15th-century Orthodox monastery was constructed on the site of an earlier church that was erected by Roman Emperor Constantine and his mother, St. Helen. You can still see the fourth-century foundations of the ancient Roman church. The monastery houses a 15th-century stone cellar and a new, modern cellar. Try to recognize the traces of peaches, kiwi, and honey in white wines and cherries or figs in red wines. The monastery also treasures an important relic--the hand of an unknown saint, probably the queen mother of Serbian medieval kings Milutin and Dragutin.
