3.1
#5 of 13 in Museums in Sarajevo
Muzej Sarajevo 1878-1918 tells the story of the town during the Austro-Hungarian period from 1878 to the end of World War I. The museum occupies the building where Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated. Look for the plaque commemorating the incident on the outside wall and for the replica of the assassin's footprints in cement inside. Two replicas of the Browning used to assassinate the Archduke and the Duchess, plus the lifesize models of Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, are also on display. See other items from the period, such as garments, medals, uniforms, and publications, many of which are replicas. Short, but rich museum. It gives you a great general picture of the austro-hungarian rule in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The exhibitions all have English descriptions. If you're a History enthusiast, you must go to this museum. Crossing the street, you also have the bridge where the prince Franz Ferdinand was killed (a "coincidence").

This museum consists of one room where different paintings and artefacts are displayed from the austro-hungarian rule in Bosnia to the time of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. The cheap entrance fee of 4KM makes it worth your while if you'd like to learn more about the history of Sarajevo. With that said, the size of the exhibition makes for a short visit.

This museum is basically just a small room. It is very cheap and stands on the site of the assassination of Archiduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914. It is probably worth a look as it contains a few interesting facts but will not keep you occupied for very long.

Where to stay in Sarajevo

Although a compact city, Sarajevo offers a wide range of accommodations. Staying in Bascarsija (the old bazaar area) offers proximity to the most popular tourist attractions, long-established restaurants, and charming teahouses. Staying close to the activity won't cost a fortune in this fairly inexpensive town, and it is surprisingly peaceful late at night. You can choose from a number of historical hotels, but those travelling on a budget may prefer a private or dorm room in one of the many hostels. Modern establishments, which can have more reliable facilities, are mostly in the outskirts.
