Katedrala Srca Isusova, Sarajevo

4.2
The neo-Gothic and Romanesque-styled Katedrala Srca Isusova serves as the largest cathedral in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and has become a symbol of Sarajevo. Completed in 1889, the 43.2 m (141.7 ft) tall church resembles Notre Dame, with elements of typical Bosnian ornamentation. Tour the interior to see stained-glass windows that elaborately depict Biblical motifs, and see numerous frescoes created by world-famous Italian-German painter Alexander Maximilian Seitz. Observe geometrical shapes on the floors and walls, and view detailed artistic ornamentation on the woodwork. You'll also see the archbishop's tomb at the site. • Central Catholic Church in the old town, part of the neighborhood constructed during Austrian-Hungarian rule. In front of the building is a small square with Saint Pope John Paul II statue. The square also serves as the most common meeting point for young people in Sarajevo.
  • Must see in Sarajevo! Really beautiful architecture and inside very peaceful! If you are in Sarajevo don't forget this beautiful cathedral!
  • Beautiful. Free entrance. Also you will see outside one of the "Sarajevo roses" : craters left by fatal mortar strikes that have been filled with red painting.
  • Well, the design of the place seemed pretty interesting and well, even though I'm not much of a believer myself, the place did give off sort of a holy vibe, if that's the right term to use, I apologize if it isn't.
  • Whilst a strong and important symbol of the multicultural atmosphere of Sarajevo, the cathedral as such is not that impressive from a (touristic) historical perspective. Neo-Gothic example of 19th century ecclesiastical architecture - nothing special...
