Katedrala Srca Isusova, Sarajevo

4.3
#4 of 6 in Historic Sites in Sarajevo
The neo-Gothic and Romanesque-styled Katedrala Srca Isusova serves as the largest cathedral in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and has become a symbol of Sarajevo. Completed in 1889, the 43.2 m (141.7 ft) tall church resembles Notre Dame, with elements of typical Bosnian ornamentation. Tour the interior to see stained-glass windows that elaborately depict Biblical motifs, and see numerous frescoes created by world-famous Italian-German painter Alexander Maximilian Seitz. Observe geometrical shapes on the floors and walls, and view detailed artistic ornamentation on the woodwork. You'll also see the archbishop's tomb at the site. A fine example of Church architecture. When you get inside the sprawling city covers the sense of peace and tranquility. I advise everyone to visit and touch the age-old spirituality.

Where to stay in Sarajevo

Although a compact city, Sarajevo offers a wide range of accommodations. Staying in Bascarsija (the old bazaar area) offers proximity to the most popular tourist attractions, long-established restaurants, and charming teahouses. Staying close to the activity won't cost a fortune in this fairly inexpensive town, and it is surprisingly peaceful late at night. You can choose from a number of historical hotels, but those travelling on a budget may prefer a private or dorm room in one of the many hostels. Modern establishments, which can have more reliable facilities, are mostly in the outskirts.
