Gallery 11/07/95, Sarajevo

See the memorial dedicated to victims from Srebrenica at Gallery 11/07/95, where images, maps and interactive materials detail the July 1995 massacre of civilians in this region. With 8,372 confirmed deaths, the act was acknowledged as the first genocide in Europe since World War II. The exhibits present the stories of the survivors and share portraits of murdered families. You'll also witness the offensive graffiti painted on house walls and buildings by enemy forces. The site provides an artistic representation of human pain with consequences that will never be mitigated. • Must in Sarajevo. Ended up spending two days for such a small gallery but Wa worth every bit of it. Quite a dedication by the founder/photojournalist Tarik to create the space to share his work of many years.
  • The best museum in Sarajevo. Impressive, painful, rich in emotions. It must have for every young and old.
  • Great museum to understand the history about the war. It could be a bit impact but very educative. Be aware that you will need some time to read everything (if you are really into). It also includes a documentary.
  • A very powerful gallery with technically brilliant photography. Not suitable for children. Recommend the audio guide, and leaving enough time to watch all of the videos.
  • Very interesting and moving. Beautiful photography and audio guide. So sad to learn about the atrocities committed in the Bosnian war, so important not to forget.

Where to stay in Sarajevo

Although a compact city, Sarajevo offers a wide range of accommodations. Staying in Bascarsija (the old bazaar area) offers proximity to the most popular tourist attractions, long-established restaurants, and charming teahouses. Staying close to the activity won't cost a fortune in this fairly inexpensive town, and it is surprisingly peaceful late at night. You can choose from a number of historical hotels, but those travelling on a budget may prefer a private or dorm room in one of the many hostels. Modern establishments, which can have more reliable facilities, are mostly in the outskirts.
