Bascarsija, Sarajevo

4.7
#1 of 19 in Historic Sites in Sarajevo
Situated in one of the oldest areas in the city, Bascarsija represents an oriental bazzar where craftspeople sell their wares. Pick your way through vendor booths filled with colorful porcelain pots, brass coffee grinders, and decorative cloths. Cultures come together here: you can expect to see people in modern European garb alongside those outfitted in traditional Muslim attire. Underfoot, the old cobblestone adds interest. Buy crafts and merchandise fashioned by the hands of local artisans, and see products that unite the East and the West in a blend of colors, tastes, and smells. The ornamental fountain in the center of the square is worth a look, but be advised that thousands of pigeons gather here too. • Love it. Food coffe everithing amaizing. You can hvave baklava whitch is a famous bosnian dessert and it is fantastic. Take the one from the nuts it is my favourite. Also take cevapi that is famous bosnian meal at bistro Željo. But they dont serve alcohol. You can have a drink on the bar nex to it and they wil bring the food there. Also a lot of nice souvenirs to buy. In the center the souvenirs are a little bit pricey unlike the rest of the tovn but they are worthwhile.............
  • Nice seeing how they have kept the old city of Sarajevo alive, plus there is great food on every corner
  • Baščaršija (Cyrillic script: Башчаршија; pronounced [baʃ.tʃǎr.ʃi.ja]) is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Baščaršija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isaković founded the town.[1] The word Baščaršija derives from the Turkish language. The word "baš" which is "baş" in Turkish literally means "head", in some contexts however also "primary", "main", "capital" and "čaršija" which is "çarşı" in Turkish means "bazaar" or "market".[2]Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Baščaršija is half the size that it once was.
  • Baščaršija refers to the entire area that was once Old Čaršija - the city's cultural-historical core. In the main square is Sebilj (a kiosk-shaped fountain), one of the most recognisable symbol of Sarajevo.
  • Bazaar market in the old town. There are many shops here selling many survenir items. Most shop similar goods with the same price but some will give you discounts. You need to spend about 2 hours here as there are too many things to see. Many restaurants available.
