Bascarsija, Sarajevo

4.7
Must see · Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Situated in one of the oldest areas in the city, Bascarsija represents an oriental bazzar where craftspeople sell their wares. Pick your way through vendor booths filled with colorful porcelain pots, brass coffee grinders, and decorative cloths. Cultures come together here: you can expect to see people in modern European garb alongside those outfitted in traditional Muslim attire. Underfoot, the old cobblestone adds interest. Buy crafts and merchandise fashioned by the hands of local artisans, and see products that unite the East and the West in a blend of colors, tastes, and smells. The ornamental fountain in the center of the square is worth a look, but be advised that thousands of pigeons gather here too. • I adore this area!! I never can get enough of Bascarjia!!! It is so charming with its small shops, pigeons and tiny cafes.  more »
  • Hundreds of pigeons hang out at this square ready to be fed, they sit on you and feed from your hands.  more »
  • There is not much of a fountain but it works. But, the people feed the pigeons so on "back" side is where the pigeons gathered. What is really amazing is when they take off. As they beat their...  more »

  • One of the warmest communities you'll visit. Visually pleasing, and intrinsically kind. The streets are fun to walk, and its also great to people watch. Went in winter, less tourists, but still significantly noticeable. Could spend everyday just walking around, drinking coffee, eating cevapis. no worries.
  • This place is really nice. For our group it was a pity that it became dark too quickly which left us with little time to explore the place in detail. For a truly enjoyable experience, read and research the area beforehand and do arrive early so as to avoid our mistake.
  • Loved the old square. Lots of different and interesting people, shops and cultures. Definitely the number 1 place you have to visit in Sarajevo.
  • Warm, welcoming space. Amazing food. Traditional structures and their associated stories. Spend a lazy afternoon walking around and enjoying the local food and Bosnian coffee.
  • Spirit of the Old Town in Sarajevo, a market street filled with little shops of mostly handmade souvenirs and great food. Streets are filled with people making it a huge touristic attraction. A lot of things to be seen so be ready to watch close in order to see the most amazing details of the shops, streets and architecture.
