Pocitelj, Bosnia and Herzegovina

At , observe how Mediterranean and Oriental styles intertwine in one of the few urban ensembles in Bosnia and Herzegovina that have been preserved. Bosnia's King Stjepan Tvrtko I is said to have built the fortified town in 1383. Walk down narrow, cobbled streets and climb the stone stairs to the fortress. A 16th-century mosque dominates the town, but the most striking landmark is the Sahat-kula--a clock tower on the top of the hill. Other notable buildings include a madrassa (school) with its original copper domes, a hamam (public bath), and a former han (a resting point for caravans) that's now a restaurant. • Historically a predominantly Muslim town, this delightful stop on the way to Mostar is worth the effort. There are many steps to the top of the ruins of Počitelj, shallow steps for easy climbing but s...  more »
  • Pocitelj is a small place, but it is worth stopping there as the road between Mostar and Capljina was the most beautiful drive on our holiday in Herzegovina. We didnt stop at the mosque, but hiked to t...  more »

  • A good stop to relax especially during sun set. However, try to be there before that to see the inside of the fortress from the middle ages. Grab some fruits from entrance stalls to enjoy the moment.
  • Pocitelj is an Ottoman village and fortress set in a rocky mountainside. To enjoy the full benefits, you will have to prepare yourself to climb the long stone stairways to the top. It can be hard-going on a hot day, (like today, August 10th, 2017 - it was 42°C) but panoramic views are worth it! You can buy homegrown fruit and fruit-drinks from vendors at the base of the stairs before you set off. On the way up, you will pass by the Hajji Alija mosque (c.1563) which has been fully restored since sustaining damage in the '90s, and the 16 m Sahat Kula clock tower which has been without its bell since 1917.  You will need good rubber-soled shoes and some flexibility to explore the octagonal tower in the ruins of the fortress. But you can also climb a little further in the open to the uppermost ramparts for some breathtaking views over the surrounding hills and Neretva River valley.
  • Lost in the middle of green Herzegovina, this fortress is an attraction you cannot miss once you go to Mostar. It was almost destroyed during the war, but now is completely reconstructed.
  • That's unique example of the middle age city with the castle, were people are living still in the historical houses. Absolutely worth to stop and visit it! Really impressing view from the top of the castle's tower!
  • Great place to spand few hours and look around :-) you should go upstairs and see this beautiful view and feel this peace :-)
