Pocitelj, Bosnia and Herzegovina

At , observe how Mediterranean and Oriental styles intertwine in one of the few urban ensembles in Bosnia and Herzegovina that have been preserved. Bosnia's King Stjepan Tvrtko I is said to have built the fortified town in 1383. Walk down narrow, cobbled streets and climb the stone stairs to the fortress. A 16th-century mosque dominates the town, but the most striking landmark is the Sahat-kula--a clock tower on the top of the hill. Other notable buildings include a madrassa (school) with its original copper domes, a hamam (public bath), and a former han (a resting point for caravans) that's now a restaurant. • I was going on a day trip to Bosnia from Croatia, where they stopped for a quick break here. Stony walk path, and loads of small vendor stalls with Honey, fruits at very reasonable price. As we walked...  more »
  • It's one of the few places remained very cute local. are you staying in astounded to hear the history of. Type here the magic of carry on. Half an hour's drive from Mostardan. Before you go to Kravice. already way above. Along the way, the view is beautiful. blagajdan where are you going through from the river Neretvanın. the bridge is not very safe (in terms of traffic), you can go back and forth a bit, or photos. You can leave your car in front of the restaurant at the entrance to the village, then it's up to your energy. You can go upstairs and a little tired, but most don't come without seeing the scenery. When I go in front of the Tower they come up there to remodel the barrier the barrier didn't let me. I did it to get out of the Tower, including the beauty. great view but watch out for rocks-don't fall too. Don't waste your time here for lunch.

  • Nice little fortress village on the way to Mostar worth the quick stopover. There is a really nice bakery on the parking (right after the town, or before pending where you’re coming from!) - recommend...  more »

  • Great piece of medieval fortification but it seems that it was tried to rebuild it with modern materials like glass and steel so it was closed to the public
  • Historic heritage site of Počitelj with it's stunning ottoman architecture and lots of cafes where you can enjoy Bosnian coffee or try traditional food in one of a few restaurants
  • A good stop to relax especially during sun set. However, try to be there before that to see the inside of the fortress from the middle ages. Grab some fruits from entrance stalls to enjoy the moment.
  • Absolutely worth the stop. You could also climb up to the fortress for a great view
  • Pocitelj is an Ottoman village and fortress set in a rocky mountainside. To enjoy the full benefits, you will have to prepare yourself to climb the long stone stairways to the top. It can be hard-going on a hot day, (like today, August 10th, 2017 - it was 42°C) but panoramic views are worth it! You can buy homegrown fruit and fruit-drinks from vendors at the base of the stairs before you set off. On the way up, you will pass by the Hajji Alija mosque (c.1563) which has been fully restored since sustaining damage in the '90s, and the 16 m Sahat Kula clock tower which has been without its bell since 1917.  You will need good rubber-soled shoes and some flexibility to explore the octagonal tower in the ruins of the fortress. But you can also climb a little further in the open to the uppermost ramparts for some breathtaking views over the surrounding hills and Neretva River valley.
