Blagaj tekija, Mostar

4.5
#3 of 19 in Sightseeing in Mostar
Landmark Tourist Spot
Situated below a massive cliff at the source of the Buna River, Blagaj tekija represents an Ottoman religious structure--one that is still used by monks--in a Mediterranean setting. With its temperate climate, idyllic setting, and drinkable fresh water, the site was a favorite spot for numerous Roman nobles, Ottoman viziers, and Austro-Hungarian officers. See the river--one of the strongest in Europe--and observe a wide variety of birds here, including the threatened white-headed vulture. View the plots that hold Mediterranean fruits and tour the shrine, tomb, and mausoleum. • Really beautiful. Enjoy a lunch or snack at the restaurant situated between the river and a stream - very cooling when hot. Also, I highly recommend the boat ride (4km/person) into the cave. It's magical.
  • Peaceful place. Perfect tranquility base near beautiful Buna.
  • There are graves inside the house. It is spooky. Great location tho...
  • Absolutely breathtaking. Loved the atmosphere: the location, its surroundings and even the friendly stall owners who weren't pushing their goods in my face.
  • Gorgeous Ottoman dervish site, though somewhat less beautiful than it could be because of the ill-conceived tourist restaurants along the river. But very pretty nonetheless.
