Take in the grandeur of Metropolitan Cathedral of Sucre, Bolivia's seat of the Roman Catholic Church. Founded in 1559 and taking close to 260 years to build, the structure features a blend of architectural styles, with the Renaissance main body juxtaposed to the Baroque bell tower. On the tower, look for mini statues of the twelve apostles and the four patron saints of Sucre. Enter to see the white nave with gold lining, brightly lit as glass pierces stained glass windows. Admire the large oil paintings covering the walls, hand-carved pews, and large crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceilng. • As specified in the guide du routard, the exterior façade presents the main interest of this Cathedral and fortunately. The façade is actually one of the great riches of this Bolivian constitutional capital... but to visit the inside? No schedule and no one can tell us... too bad!

  • Normally the only way to see the cathedral is by visiting the museum next door, both recommended highlights of Sucre. Alas, both are closed for renovation as of August 2017 and the cathedral isn't eve...  more »

  • Very beautiful place! great architecture
  • Another nice Cathedral, which is still in great condition.
  • Amazing
  • It is a beautiful place, both the internal structure and outside. It has some impressive details and is especially accessible to tour. It has a small museum on the back and was very cordial. Highly recommended to visit in the city of Sucre.

Where to stay in Sucre

With building restrictions in place for decades, the city of Sucre has developed a little differently than most other cities on the continent. However, the touristic appeal of Sucre has driven up demand for accommodations--now slotted in old, colonial-era buildings rather than new-build high-rises. This development ethos has worked well, with lodgings in Sucre's center among the most comfortable and characterful in the country. Exclusive options cluster around the town's prettiest plazas, with grand rooms and fine-dining restaurants. Budget-minded visitors should explore the range of posadas (guesthouses), set in modest formerly residential buildings on the town's side streets.
