Metropolitan Cathedral of Sucre, Sucre

3.9
#5 of 13 in Historic Sites in Sucre
Take in the grandeur of Metropolitan Cathedral of Sucre, Bolivia's seat of the Roman Catholic Church. Founded in 1559 and taking close to 260 years to build, the structure features a blend of architectural styles, with the Renaissance main body juxtaposed to the Baroque bell tower. On the tower, look for mini statues of the twelve apostles and the four patron saints of Sucre. Enter to see the white nave with gold lining, brightly lit as glass pierces stained glass windows. Admire the large oil paintings covering the walls, hand-carved pews, and large crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceilng. Normally the only way to see the cathedral is by visiting the museum next door, both recommended highlights of Sucre. Alas, both are closed for renovation as of August 2017 and the cathedral isn't eve...  more »

Most of the time that the Cathedral is closed. The Museum is next to is closed for renovations. It's a simple Church, without ostentation, with few images, the most important being that of the Virgin of Guadalupe. She is more impressive from the outside, all in stone, in front of the main square. Don't pay to visit.

Where to stay in Sucre

With building restrictions in place for decades, the city of Sucre has developed a little differently than most other cities on the continent. However, the touristic appeal of Sucre has driven up demand for accommodations--now slotted in old, colonial-era buildings rather than new-build high-rises. This development ethos has worked well, with lodgings in Sucre's center among the most comfortable and characterful in the country. Exclusive options cluster around the town's prettiest plazas, with grand rooms and fine-dining restaurants. Budget-minded visitors should explore the range of posadas (guesthouses), set in modest formerly residential buildings on the town's side streets.
