Cal Orck'o, Sucre
(2.9/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web)
Walk the paths where dinosaurs once roamed on a tour at Cal Orck'o. This park displays fossilized dinosaur tracks that have been well preserved throughout the ages--including over 5,000 tracks of nearly 300 species of dinosaurs. As you enter, you'll see re-creations of the dinosaurs in lifelike statues at the front of the park to match the footprints. A tour of the attraction takes you relatively close to the prints, which are left in stone. Be careful to check before you head to the park, as not all tours are given in English. • The Parque Cretácico has its flagship in Cal orck'o, paleontological site with the largest number of dinosaur tracks in the world and the longest series of prints. It's easily reachable from Plaza 25 de Mayo (side) using a bus, at a cost of 15Bs (return ticket). The cost of the site is to add more, 30Bs 5Bs for those who want to take pictures (comes a note with permission to attach to clothes). At the entrance you can choose whether to follow in group a guide in English or Spanish-speaking or if proceed independently. The guides provide guidance about the history of the Park and about how both palaeontological site format. Only at 12 and 13 descend at Cal orck'o, where our guide, Daniel, showed us the different types of prints, teaching us to distinguish those carnivores than herbivores. The site is a must see and you can't not go there in the hours that provide the "Footprints" (remember that does not have a fee). Finally, Cal orck'o was discovered after that in that area has opened a quarry. Although tried to mobilize UNESCO for site security, jobs, together with the absolute fragility of rock face (you can easily see little bits of rock detached from the wall during the visit), cause the downfall of entire layers of rock and the loss of numerous footprints (has been lost, for example, those of "Johnny Walker", which formed the longest track of footprints ever discovered in the world). Fortunately for now the fall of one layer with the layer below it discovers new and different prints. But, unfortunately, the layers are not infinite.

  • We decided to visit Dinosaur Tracks in the morning before our leaving Sucre noon time. The Park is opened quite late at 10.00am. So we had to wait about 1hour. If someone intends to visit this park in...  more »
  • It is possible to go on their own with bus line and is very worthwhile! At first they pass a video about dinosaurs, then you get a free time to walk through the Park, which has nice reconstructions of dinosaurs. Then have a guided tour to the footprints. The only thing I regret is that there is a quarry next door, which threatens this archeological find.
