Basilica de San Francisco, Sucre

(4.4/5 based on 50 reviews on the web)
Head to Basilica de San Francisco, a highly storied church built in 1538, at the same time as the establishment of the city. Beginning as a makeshift structure, the church as it stands today was not fully built until 1581. Look for the nation's "liberty bell", which tolled in 1809 as Bolivia celebrated independence. Be aware that you will need a photography permit before you take any photos of the church, though this comes packaged with a tour guide. • This convent originally had very humble features and had as main application, the evangelization of and catechizing children from 1539. A year later, the faithful are provided to build a church and casa cural. The Church had at its inception two cloisters of arches of brick on stone columns. Later, in 1581, concluded the new temple and convent grounds were expanded by donations from the faithful, occupying what is now the barracks, market and whatever custom and was also public prison. At the beginning the temple was a central nave, which was added later, a cruise, its chapels and a side nave. Inside stands the coffered ceiling of mudejar style. The beautifully carved and gilded altar. Another important feature of historic importance are the church towers, which are home to "The Liberty Bell" that carries the following inscription: "the conception Inmaculada de la Virgen Madre de Dios, patron saint of all the Spains and America, in this city of the silver G.R.E.L." Maestro. Migl. Maria this year 1800 ".
