Basilica de San Francisco, Sucre

4.5
#4 of 13 in Historic Sites in Sucre
Head to Basilica de San Francisco, a highly storied church built in 1538, at the same time as the establishment of the city. Beginning as a makeshift structure, the church as it stands today was not fully built until 1581. Look for the nation's "liberty bell", which tolled in 1809 as Bolivia celebrated independence. Be aware that you will need a photography permit before you take any photos of the church, though this comes packaged with a tour guide. • It is one of the oldest churches of Bolivia. You can just run in, but I'd definitely for 15 Bs. pp. even with a guide. You can then in places where you normally can't come as in the crypt and on the roof at the la campana liberdad.

  • Located next to the central market, near a convent that was seized by the army and today is a barracks. This beautiful church has a guide service to explain and explore all its charms. Just go to the sacristy and pay a small fee and will have a 50 minutes ride very interesting. Watch out for the richness of the altar. The Saints with hair and eyelashes. The visit to the belfry. The finale is to visit the crypt beneath the main altar. Curious and creepy.

  • Amazing.
  • The Basilica minor of S. Francisco directed by the Conventual Franciscans, a place of extreme inner gathering brothers; the remarkable thing is that to be open both in the mornings and afternoons allows the faithful to pray and come closer our Lord. In addition to the collection of paintings of Saints more altarpieces. A pleasant spectacle to view...

Where to stay in Sucre

With building restrictions in place for decades, the city of Sucre has developed a little differently than most other cities on the continent. However, the touristic appeal of Sucre has driven up demand for accommodations--now slotted in old, colonial-era buildings rather than new-build high-rises. This development ethos has worked well, with lodgings in Sucre's center among the most comfortable and characterful in the country. Exclusive options cluster around the town's prettiest plazas, with grand rooms and fine-dining restaurants. Budget-minded visitors should explore the range of posadas (guesthouses), set in modest formerly residential buildings on the town's side streets.
