#4 of 7 in Nature in Santa Cruz Department
Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is a national park in northeast Santa Cruz Department, Province of José Miguel de Velasco, Bolivia, on the border with Brazil.DescriptionNoel Kempff Mercado National Park covers 750,000 hectares of land, much of which consists of the Serrania de Huanchaca. The park is located on the Brazilian Shield in the northeast Santa Cruz Department in Bolivia. The Rio de Itenez is its eastern and northern border separating it from the neighboring Brazil. It adjoins the Serra Ricardo Franco State Park, created in 1997, in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It is situated in a transition zone where the Amazonian rain forests and the dry forest and savannas of Cerrado meet. The park is made up of five distinct habitats, including upland evergreen forest, deciduous forest, upland cerrado savanna, savanna wetlands, and forest wetlands. As a whole, the region can be described as having a marked dry season in the winter and a mean annual precipitation of 1,500 mm.HistoryIn 1908, Percy Fawcett first explored the area that is now the national park. It was not until almost 70 years later that the area was looked at again. In the 1970s geologists were sent to the area to survey the rock formations of the Precambrian Shield region in Bolivia. They published on the geology and landforms and produced the first maps. This expedition attracted the attention of Noel Kempff Mercado, an esteemed conservation biologist of the time. Mercado recognized the global significance of the area enough to propose a campaign to preserve it. Unfortunately, Mercado was murdered by drug traffickers and never saw his dream become a reality. Many of his fellow citizens responded. The government established the park and named it in his honour. It came into existence in 1988 as a 750,000 hectare area of undisturbed land.

  • I had the happiness to reach Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado, the beauty of its lush vegetation and waterfalls that have, make it paradise, of difficult access, the way land is difficult, but worth and the Rangers who protect the place are very well trained and above all love their work. To reach it is necessary to contact the park or a guide who knows the place and contacts. It is a real beauty, it houses a large number and variety of life, generating more life.

  • Researcher biologist Noel Kempff Mercado is now called what was previously the Huanchaca plateau... The rivers Itenez and Paraná bring US closer to the Rainbow and Alfeld waterfalls... Let's go... Clear everything must be planned... with the vehicle transporting them, the boat is already waiting, provisions and driver already waiting... of course is a journey of adventure... because you have to sleep in a tent under a tent and sleeping bags... It is better to bring water or but pills to purify the river water before drinking... Dry foods are ideal since not they spoil in the humid and hot environment... Linda decision to go to the place... The first aid kit is best to anticipate although not in use... and by security plane must be waiting at the exit of the boat with outboard motor... It is a unique experience...

  • At the end of the day we are only humans, a mere flesh and blood to suck and bite on. While trying to evade numerous biting insects of any kind possible to imagine, our party explored the wild and virgin jungles on the edge of the Brazilian frontier. We have seen magnificent waterfall, isolated lagoons and an immense plateau projecting 980 m straight into the humid tropical skies. It was a life-time experience. If you're in Bolivia DO NOT MISS THIS PARK!
