Visit San Francisco of Potosi Convent and Temple, Bolivia's oldest religious complex. Originally constructed in 1547, it was demolished due to its inadequate size and then rebuilt in 1707. The church features two towers and an outdoor temple. Step inside to see the interior full of Baroque ornamentation, and look for the image of Christ of Vera Cruz, dating from 1550. Climb to the top of the church towers or up to the convent roof for panoramic views over the city and the nearby mountain. Where to stay in Potosi

Because of protection from overdevelopment by UNESCO, you won't find many high-rise, newly built hotels within Potosi's city limits. Instead, visitors can choose from a good selection of colonial-era buildings housing charming hotels and welcoming guesthouses. Generally speaking, look to the south end of the center for more budget-friendly options, with little guesthouses located on residential side streets. By contrast, the more spacious area surrounding the train station has the majority of the grander hotels, set on impressive boulevards and overlooking central plazas.

  • Your ticket gets you a guided tour of the church, cloisters and crypt, but the best thing for me was the roof. Lovely construction and you are allowed to go all over it on narrow walkways. Great views...  more »
  • Probably the most interesting church in Potosi to visit, as it's more than just a church of course. Tour guide was quite knowledgeable. Catacombs and access to rooftop were nice touches.  more »
  • I took the tour, mainly for the rooftop view and the crypts. Both were great, the rooftop view was the best of the four churches I toured in Potosi. It's worth the cost just for that. The guide was gr...  more »
