Monte Chacaltaya, La Paz

(4.5/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Ascend Monte Chacaltaya, an impressive mountain in the Cordillera Real, one of the main ranges in the Bolivian Andes. With an elevation of 5,421 m (17,785 ft), the towering peak offers a challenge for experienced hikers and amateurs alike. Head up the mountain road, enjoying extensive views of the range as you curl up the mountain. Home to what was once the highest ski area in the world--now abandoned, with the affects of global warming reducing the skiable area over the years--and an observatory, the mountain road offers a good route into the area for amateur mountaineers, as the walk from the road to the summit is relatively short. Make Monte Chacaltaya a part of your La Paz vacation plans using our La Paz vacation route planner.

  • great opportunity see snow, very near La Paz, can bus and then up the rest on foot, don't let go if you go to La paz.

  • The ascent is not long, but, due to high altitude, many may find it difficult to get to the top. There are two steps to climb: walk after reaching the first step in a more flat, and then there's a relatively difficult access site between stones. It's absolutely beautiful view those from the top of the mountain Chacaltaya. I walk through an agency indicated by Loki Hostel. The ride is relatively short, but it's worth it. Access by bus is a bit scary, because you go through a narrow gorge. lol! I recommend just to prepare physically, because the climb is challenging (even more for residents of Plains).

  • The place is spectacular and we were with a VAN coming out of La Paz by dirt road. Lots of snow during this period.
