Monte Chacaltaya, La Paz

(4.5/5 based on 200 reviews on the web)
Ascend Monte Chacaltaya, an impressive mountain in the Cordillera Real, one of the main ranges in the Bolivian Andes. With an elevation of 5,421 m (17,785 ft), the towering peak offers a challenge for experienced hikers and amateurs alike. Head up the mountain road, enjoying extensive views of the range as you curl up the mountain. Home to what was once the highest ski area in the world--now abandoned, with the affects of global warming reducing the skiable area over the years--and an observatory, the mountain road offers a good route into the area for amateur mountaineers, as the walk from the road to the summit is relatively short. Make Monte Chacaltaya a part of your La Paz vacation plans using our La Paz vacation route planner.

  • Snowy peak mountain. Standard tour offered by agencies makes you the 300 m of the peak. Just walk it and will be at the peak. Detail: is a walk to more than 5000 m altitude. Rarefied air. Although the path is short, it's quite tiring. (but it is possible to go slowly, like 10 steps and breathing kkkk). There is no technical difficulty. In the summer, choose a day that the peak is snow. Beautiful place!!!!

  • The chance to see snow falling and play is an experience without equal, unfortunately what suffers is the altitude and the little amount of snow due to global warming, however doesn't make it less intense the feeling and the splendid view which is to reach the Summit of Mount, really worth the effort.

  • Already visited many ski resorts. This only applies if you want adventure why climb Mount should be done with minimum safety equipment and does not occur it. The place is dirty, abandoned. The journey to get there is dangerous, several elbows with defrost water. We were lucky to have a driver quiet but is quite dangerous even.
