Monte Chacaltaya, La Paz

Outdoor Activity
Ascend Monte Chacaltaya, an impressive mountain in the Cordillera Real, one of the main ranges in the Bolivian Andes. With an elevation of 5,421 m (17,785 ft), the towering peak offers a challenge for experienced hikers and amateurs alike. Head up the mountain road, enjoying extensive views of the range as you curl up the mountain. Home to what was once the highest ski area in the world--now abandoned, with the affects of global warming reducing the skiable area over the years--and an observatory, the mountain road offers a good route into the area for amateur mountaineers, as the walk from the road to the summit is relatively short. Make Monte Chacaltaya a part of your La Paz vacation plans using our La Paz vacation route planner.

  • The day was very windy and the tour bus hired could not do all the way, leaving us a boooaaa walk to the ski station. Wind and altitude made the ascent more than intense, but it was worth it, the view is beautiful and gives a very big satisfaction get up there. Some people better prepared physically walked to the Summit which is after ski station, a journey that in terms of distance is short, but it requires a little. The problem is that the wind was very strong, I crapped out and I took a chance. Light shield, despite the cold and the Sun is strong and get ready for the "soroche". And to think there was one of the highest ski resorts and on account of climate change no longer have enough snow for the practice of sport.

  • It's amazing, you can not leave without visiting it, we pay a tour by 70 bs and part 15 of the input, it is really beautiful, above all there is a cabin that you can drink warm or fill the thermos for some mates, take chocolate coming from 10!

  • For those who've never seen snow like me, is a great option. We found a lot of neeeeeve, gave it to enjoy too. The ascent is kind of bad because the curve and bad road, but all the perrengue pays off. I promise lol the altitude can generate a bit of headache and fatigue. I went in March and had a lot of snow, according to the guide is in the summer that snow falls in accordance
