Monte Chacaltaya, La Paz
(4.6/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Ascend Monte Chacaltaya, an impressive mountain in the Cordillera Real, one of the main ranges in the Bolivian Andes. With an elevation of 5,421 m (17,785 ft), the towering peak offers a challenge for experienced hikers and amateurs alike. Head up the mountain road, enjoying extensive views of the range as you curl up the mountain. Home to what was once the highest ski area in the world--now abandoned, with the affects of global warming reducing the skiable area over the years--and an observatory, the mountain road offers a good route into the area for amateur mountaineers, as the walk from the road to the summit is relatively short. Make Monte Chacaltaya a part of your La Paz vacation plans using our La Paz vacation route planner.

  • Ride that requires more than physical because of height (more than 4300 metres above the sea, uphill), but the look is beautiful. On sunny days and clear skies is definitely better. The tour sold by companies does not include food or water, so go prepared. We pay 90 bs for each, plus 15 bs (script combined with the Valley of the Moon, which costs 15 bs to get more).

  • Did the tour with an agency, leaving La Paz. The excitement started even before you reach the base of the Chacaltaya: micro bus was really old and made a lot of noise, and the narrow, potholed road and unpaved, the impression is that would fall on the cliffs. But it all worked out. Need to walk about 200 metres (ramp) to get to the top of the peak. Walk hard and tiring, due to high altitude and high winds, but the sacrifice pays off ... the view from up there is beautiful, you can see the highest peaks of the Cordillera Real.

  • Did the tour with a tour operator in town. Is a unique and wonderful experience! Was one of the hardest I've ever done, at the top of the mountain is very cold and rough air, chewing coca leaves helps you feel good. Is perfect for those who like adventure and want to enjoy the grandeur of nature. And at the top of the mountain there is always at least a little snow.
