Huayna Potosi, La Paz

4.8
#2 of 19 in Parks in La Paz
Soaring over the highest capital city in the world, Huayna Potosi offers a challenging hike up a scenic, snow-covered mountain. An adventure for even the most experienced of climbers, the route typically begins with a 4x4 ride to the base camp, followed by a long hike to another camp located on the snow line. From here, the summit is reached on a hike up the glacier, with most people doing this stretch in 6-8 hours. It isn't usual for people to complete the entire climb in a day, but it has been done before. Check weather conditions before traveling and heed the advice of experts at each camp. • While on our five months trip in South-America, we were really keen to do one of the tall peaks of the Andes and were originally planning on doing Cotopaxi. However, Huayna Potosí looked cooler, so we...  more »
  • Although it is said to be the easiest over 6000m mountain in the world it still requires adequate acclimatization and fitness level to reach the summit. Most tour agencies would tell you everyone can ...  more »
  • I first made the ascent of the potosi with two buddies, we had so two guides (German and his brother). Herman is really very friendly, very quiet and very professional. He always does the potosi (even several times a week!) and knows him so really by heart! I then continued on the launched by the ilimani, and there still German was super pro. During the two ascents he made as a leader, even at 5500 meter during the ilimani! The stuff is great, no complaints here above and it can lend everything that was not (c is to can loan everything). I recommend you contact him if you want to make a Summit in Bolivia, Potosí, the ilimani or another! Send him a pm on facebook, it is called Germán paz moutainguide

  • “Easiest 6000m” don’t be fooled into thinking this means it will be easy. This is probably one of the most difficult things I have ever done. I consider myself in reasonable shape, but the altitude just takes all your energy. Views from the top are amazing and it’s an amazing feeling to reach the top. Definitely worth the trip if you like hiking.
  • Definitely a trip of a life time :) If your in La Paz, it's a short 2 hour ride to get to camp. We did the 3 day excursion but you can do it in 2 and skip the acclimation and mountain ice climbing skills day. For us, Day 1 was learning to walk with rope and climb ice. Day 2 we started the hike with all of your gear. You gear weighs you down more than you think. You ill then reach Rock Camp at 5130 m. Sleep here, wake up at midnight and climb the rest to 6088m and watch the sunrise. Walking in the dark, we didn't think about too much. After the sun came up, we got to see everything we hiked! There are some beautiful views and nice steep parts! We took a guiding company for $188 that included all the gear, sleeping bags, accommodation, transportation, food and mountain equipment. We went June 2017.
  • I have almost died here but it was worth it. Stunning views, unique experience
  • The most difficult challenge of my life (mentally and physically). An incredible 3 day tour for a very fair price. Highly recommended.
  • Awesome!! Best moment of my life!
