Catedral Basilica Menor de Nuestra Senora de la Paz, La Paz
Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Experience an essential part of La Paz history at Catedral Basilica Menor de Nuestra Senora de la Paz, a Roman Catholic cathedral whose original construction dates back to the 17th century. Following a decision in the early 19th century to demolish the original and start again, construction began in 1835 on architect Manuel Sanahuja's neoclassical structure with Baroque elements. It took a full 90 years for the cathedral to open, and even then it remained incomplete until Pope John Paul II's visit in 1989--a full 150 years after its initial construction. Head to the interior to admire the many ornate chadeliers and intricately carved altar.
