Isla del Sol, Copacabana

4.2
Explore Inca ruins and enjoy phenomenal scenery at Isla del Sol. A highlight of Lake Titicaca, this "Island of the Sun" is dotted with more than 80 ruins across its 70 sq km (27 sq mi) terrain. The rocky island has no roads or cars, so you'll have to hike or catch a boat to get from one side to the other. Whichever method you choose will be worth it, allowing you to discover the fascinating scenery the island has to offer. According to local legend, the sun was born here, and it definitely hasn't gone away yet. Bring water, food, and plenty of sunscreen before you set out on your journey. Also, make sure you carry some cash, as you'll have to pay local people a small toll for passing through their land. • We went by boat to Isla del Sol. The engine of the boat suspended, and there were no life jackets. After a 2 hour drive, we reached the Isla del Sol, or The southern part of the island. The Communidad Yumani consists 90% of hostels and restaurants. Original way of life is hardly anything to see. The way the North is barricaded. The locals are highly aggressive at the border to the North. You can walk up to the Mirador, and then has a great overview.

  • We booked a tour to the Isla del sol and Isla de la Luna with a company called Rutas Bolivia Expediciones and they were lovely. The guys working there matched prices for us and were happy to answer al...  more »
  • It is an island in Lake Titicaca, accessible through very frequent boats from Copacabana. It is very hilly, some very interesting historical remains, and beautiful views around the Lake and the Cordillera de los Andes. It is more than 4,000 metres above sea level. Very well equipped with bars and restaurants, very tourist place.

  • If you only have a few days & want peace & quiet, go in the week. The weekends are much more crowded.
  • A beautiful island located in South Americas biggest lake and also the highest lake in the world at around 3 800 m. I spent a day here back in 2003 with my friend Iza so been a while but still remember the visit. Nice to walk around exploring and enjoying the scenery. There's also some old ruins and other things to explore. A nice place to visit if you have the opportunitit.
  • Calm and relaxing place, the sunset is just amazing, perfect to look the stars at night. 2 days is perfect to stay there and get to know the north and South part of the island.
  • Amazing place. The sunset is astonished, but be careful the hotels dont always have warm showers (they will tell you they have but not always...) It is a perfect place to camp 2 or three days.
  • Nice views and great boat tour to Isla del Sol
