Explore Inca ruins and enjoy phenomenal scenery at Isla del Sol. A highlight of Lake Titicaca, this "Island of the Sun" is dotted with more than 80 ruins across its 70 sq km (27 sq mi) terrain. The rocky island has no roads or cars, so you'll have to hike or catch a boat to get from one side to the other. Whichever method you choose will be worth it, allowing you to discover the fascinating scenery the island has to offer. According to local legend, the sun was born here, and it definitely hasn't gone away yet. Bring water, food, and plenty of sunscreen before you set out on your journey. Also, make sure you carry some cash, as you'll have to pay local people a small toll for passing through their land. It is very hilly, some very interesting historical remains, and beautiful views around the Lake and the Cordillera de los Andes. It is more than 4,000 metres above sea level. Very well equipped with bars and restaurants, very tourist place.
Calm and relaxing place, the sunset is just amazing, perfect to look the stars at night. 2 days is perfect to stay there and get to know the north and South part of the island.
Amazing place. The sunset is astonished, but be careful the hotels dont always have warm showers (they will tell you they have but not always...) It is a perfect place to camp 2 or three days.
Amazing Place! You can reach it through Copacabana city. Buy a boat ticket and go to explore this unique place!
Be aware of the safety while you are traveling alone. On January 2018, one Korean female tourist in 40s got raped and murdered by the cut in her neck while walking around the island by herself. The following is the new article from "www eldeber com bo", the original title is "Policía investiga asesinato de ciudadana coreana en la Isla del Sol" and translated to English by Google. -------------------------------------------------------- The Police are investigating the murder and alleged rape of a woman of Korean nationality whose remains were found in the town of Challa, a community located on Isla del Sol, an hour and a half from the Copacabana sanctuary in the department of La Paz. According to preliminary investigations, the body belongs to Cho Young - Hee, 40 years old , who would have come to Copacabana without company and was registered on January 9 in a local accommodation. "By averaging 17:00 yesterday (Thursday), FELCC officials who have a seat in the town of Copacabana have gone to Isla del Sol where it has proceeded to the legal lifting of a body belonging to the Korean citizen" , informed the director of the Special Force of Fight against the Crime (FELCC) of La Paz, Jhonny Aguilera. According to the external examination done by the police officers, the body of the woman had a wound in the neck area, which makes presume that she was beheaded and, due to a series of signs, probably sexually veined. "The characteristics of this death are linked to the exercise of violence, especially at the height of the neck where it has a cut, and it also has two other wounds on the body caused by a puncture wound ," he said. Police suspect that the woman made a walk through the sector alone , something that would have been used by the attackers to perpetrate an assault and subsequent murder. At the moment, no detainee is held in this case and the Police has already contacted the Korean consulate to communicate the fact and make the delivery of the body of the victim.
Isla del Sol is a small, but beautifull Island. I have only spend the afternoon there and walked around in the south area, so keep this in mind. The south part offers some small ruines to check out, and it is a easy area to hike. From the higher part you get an amazing view on lake Titicaca. The boat ride to and from the island is also very nice and gives good opportunities for taking pictures.
