Isla del Sol, Copacabana

4.0
#1 of 45 in Historic Sites in Bolivia
Explore Inca ruins and enjoy phenomenal scenery at Isla del Sol. A highlight of Lake Titicaca, this "Island of the Sun" is dotted with more than 80 ruins across its 70 sq km (27 sq mi) terrain. The rocky island has no roads or cars, so you'll have to hike or catch a boat to get from one side to the other. Whichever method you choose will be worth it, allowing you to discover the fascinating scenery the island has to offer. According to local legend, the sun was born here, and it definitely hasn't gone away yet. Bring water, food, and plenty of sunscreen before you set out on your journey. Also, make sure you carry some cash, as you'll have to pay local people a small toll for passing through their land. Make Isla del Sol a centerpiece of your Copacabana vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Copacabana vacation route planner.

Isla del Sol is definitely a trip worth. The villages are still quite original and because there are no cars it is very quiet - but also very mountainous. It is important to know that the northern part of the island, which constitutes 2/3 of the island may not be entered. These include also the old Inca sites. Due to a local conflict, it is stopped on the border to the North by locals. A day hike around the island is so impossible.

We wanted to initially go on the day to trek a few kilometers from North to South. Arrived at the pier, big disappointment: more possible to get to the North but only to the South of the island (a conflict broke out between the North and the South part about the bad distribution of tourism on the island to create a blockade at the level of the northern part). Determined to visit "the jewels" we decided to go there even if the market is not possible. The boat: first that we were scared by boat: fills to the brim edge, a motor on two that hold any 5 min with a thick smoke that filled the passenger compartment, no life vest in case where... In short we got so scared that we don't even not found on the island of the Luna that was planned in our post also. Arrived, somewhat disappointed: hundreds of hotels and restaurants extend to the top of the island and all appear to be unoccupied (to believe that every inhabitant of the southern part to wanted to create a tourist facility for him also have it's share of the cake). This is just the top of the island where our were able to enjoy the view. BEAUTIFUL but also frustrating as impossible to cross now. Even in remaining sleep on the island it is currently impossible even to walk to reach the northern part to be we were explained.

Boats from Copa are very slow. If you are going to go stay on the island, it might be nicer. Taking a day trip there means you'll spend more hours on the boat to and from the island than you'll spend ...  more »

Where to stay in Copacabana

Set in such a scenic spot on the shores of Lake Titicaca, it's little wonder that people wish to stay in Copacabana when exploring the region's natural and cultural attractions. Beachside stays remain popular, with chic, boutique style hotels and larger high-rise options offering extensive views of South America's largest lake. Expect to pay a little less when you look a few streets back from the sand and the water, with hotels and hostels both available. Thanks the Copacabana's continuous uphill slope, views of the lake are possible from pretty much anywhere around the main urban area.
