Isla del Sol, Copacabana

4.1
Explore Inca ruins and enjoy phenomenal scenery at Isla del Sol. A highlight of Lake Titicaca, this "Island of the Sun" is dotted with more than 80 ruins across its 70 sq km (27 sq mi) terrain. The rocky island has no roads or cars, so you'll have to hike or catch a boat to get from one side to the other. Whichever method you choose will be worth it, allowing you to discover the fascinating scenery the island has to offer. According to local legend, the sun was born here, and it definitely hasn't gone away yet. Bring water, food, and plenty of sunscreen before you set out on your journey. Also, make sure you carry some cash, as you'll have to pay local people a small toll for passing through their land. • I last visited Lake Titicaca 4 years ago, but from the Peruvian side. Well, visiting Isla del Sol was completely different, in a good way. There were many full boats as we headed over but I barely saw...  more »

  • Amazing place. The sunset is astonished, but be careful the hotels dont always have warm showers (they will tell you they have but not always...) It is a perfect place to camp 2 or three days.
  • Isla del Sol is a small, but beautifull Island. I have only spend the afternoon there and walked around in the south area, so keep this in mind. The south part offers some small ruines to check out, and it is a easy area to hike. From the higher part you get an amazing view on lake Titicaca. The boat ride to and from the island is also very nice and gives good opportunities for taking pictures.
  • You can see beautiful star at the night. Hostel is not expensive
  • I fell in love with this place! It's so beautiful and calm. No street noise, just perfect sunrises and sunsets.
  • As usual you have to pay for everything here. The place is not that special. Granted the view is amazing.

Where to stay in Copacabana

Set in such a scenic spot on the shores of Lake Titicaca, it's little wonder that people wish to stay in Copacabana when exploring the region's natural and cultural attractions. Beachside stays remain popular, with chic, boutique style hotels and larger high-rise options offering extensive views of South America's largest lake. Expect to pay a little less when you look a few streets back from the sand and the water, with hotels and hostels both available. Thanks the Copacabana's continuous uphill slope, views of the lake are possible from pretty much anywhere around the main urban area.
