  • Beautiful Cathedral of the eighteenth century, very well maintained on the outside, but little kept inside, located opposite the PLaza 14 September.

  • Its official name is Catedral Metropolitana de San Sebastián and is located on the South side of Plaza 14 September, being considered Monumental, historical, Cultural and architectural heritage since 1967. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century on ancient existing temples of the 15th and 17TH centuries. Inside is the image of San Nicolás Tolentino with a padlock closing his mouth, among other images. The stone portal is also striking. It is on the South side of main square.

Construction was entrusted to the engineer Domingo de el Mazo, made with lime, sand and stone, and the works were completed but not conclude completely in 1630. The original project included two beautifully carved stone porticos: what exists at present and giving the Esteban Arce Street and another, which was facing the main square but which was never built. The reconstruction of 1735 was initiated by don Francisco de Urquizo, rector and vicar of the mother church, original name of the Cathedral, who financed his own pocket this restructuring. View from the porch of the Cathedral MetropolitanaLa last major restructuring was held at the beginning of the 18th century, when the new diocese raised the rank of the matrix Church and this became a cathedral. Two new aisles were added to the only one that existed and the temple remained with the three existing bodies. This beautiful temple which has a Latin cross of three bodies, is of mestizo Baroque style with a beautiful façade made stone portico. It has double arches on its travel from East to West and spiral columns supporting its three bodies. In the Centre maintains an arc with an exquisitely ornate circular window. In the nave stands the vault of great architectural beauty. Stand out, without a doubt, the domes of neo classic style located in the Center, in addition to his clock tower of 126 feet of impressive beauty topped by a dome, it was concluded after more than two centuries. The interior is a unique splendor where colonial architecture can be seen in all its dimensions. The walls are full of drawings depicting biblical scenes, cherubs, flowers and many other paintings detailing the devotion of the artists of the time. It is considered Metropolitan Cathedral since 1975, date in which the Diocese of Cochabamba was designated as metropolitan see by Pablo VI. The Cathedral is the center of Catholicism in Cochabamba and the principal liturgical and religious activities of this fervent City headquarters.

Where to stay in Cochabamba

You can find dozens of inexpensive hotels and budget-friendly hostels between the main bus terminal and the city center in Cochabamba. The only drawback to staying in that area is that some of its side streets can be unsafe late at night, so choose carefully if you plan to go out after dark. Most foreign visitors choose to stay at one of the hotels near the main city square, where you can take advantage of good eating options that are relatively difficult to find elsewhere in town.
