Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten), Thimphu

4.2
In the heart of the city, examine a popular landmark with golden bells and spires at Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten). Built in 1972 to honor Bhutan's head of state, the structure resembles a classical Tibetan stupa crowned with a sun and crescent moon. Unlike other stupas, however, this one does not contain enshrined human remains. As you approach the memorial through a small garden, observe the representations of bodhisattvas at the gate, which symbolize power. Explore the interior's elaborately carved annexes, mandalas, statues, and shrines containing pictures of Bhutan's kings. Also, visit the chorten, or large red prayer wheels, which many devotees circumambulate clockwise to receive blessings. Plan my trip to Thimphu with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • It's not the nicest Chorten close by but has so much charm and atmosphere. Very busy from morning to night, strictly clockwise!

  • Right in town so worth a walk from your hotel, although ours was part of the tour we had with Yah Holidays Intl, so we had a guided tour. It was nice, to walk slowly towards it and take a rather slow ...  more »
  • This is a Tibetan influenced small temple located in the middle of the town. The picture that you see is all there is to see. Lot's of local Bhutanese can be seen praying at this temple.  more »

  • This is a monument built in the memory of the beloved Third king of Bhutan, remembered dearly as the father of modern Bhutan. Once, the monument was the tallest structure in the entire city... It has seen the city grow over time around it. 2017 Royal Bhutan Flower Exhibition happened here and the event has given the place the much needed facelift. Now Nu.300 entry fee is charged for visitors, but for locals in formal dress and international tourist it's free entry. Enjoy the beautiful heritage site.
  • Chorten literally means ‘Seat of Faith’ and Buddhists often call such monuments, the ‘Mind of Buddha’. The chorten is an extraordinary example of Buddhist architecture and artwork with its gorgeous paintings and intricate sculptures. It is a monument to the Third Druk Gyalpo and to World Peace.
  • A place of beauty! Anyone will be awwstruck! It is so fantastic..that you can even breath😂
  • Oct 2017. A place where the elderly Bhutanese go to pray for a better rebirth.
  • Located in the centre of Thimphu. It is also known as "the most visible religious landmark in Bhutan". It has four entrances, one entrance is open for devotees to visit the shrine. Evening time is the best time to visit, when the lights are turned on. Evening you can also find people making round over the central shrine and chanting mantras. Perfect serenity rules here.

Where to stay in Thimphu

As the capital, Thimphu features the largest range of accommodations in the kingdom. Only opening up to international tourism in the 1970's, the list remains relatively small, but the city remains in a period of development, so more options are arriving each year. Take a look along Norzim Lam, the main thoroughfare, for a number of small hotels, both budget and standard. Located close to the main attractions in the city, and overlooking the most attractive public plazas and parks, a small number of charming hotels offer mid-range and luxury rooms, with additional facilities such as pools.
