Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten), Thimphu

Landmark · Tourist Spot
In the heart of the city, examine a popular landmark with golden bells and spires at Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten). Built in 1972 to honor Bhutan's head of state, the structure resembles a classical Tibetan stupa crowned with a sun and crescent moon. Unlike other stupas, however, this one does not contain enshrined human remains. As you approach the memorial through a small garden, observe the representations of bodhisattvas at the gate, which symbolize power. Explore the interior's elaborately carved annexes, mandalas, statues, and shrines containing pictures of Bhutan's kings. Also, visit the chorten, or large red prayer wheels, which many devotees circumambulate clockwise to receive blessings. Plan my trip to Thimphu with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • It's a good place for Thimphu sightseeing. Good scenic view from inside. One can see the city from the adjacent area. The compound is clean & well maintained. Local school kids often perform here. Tourists all across the world visit here. Must visit for Bhutan tour. One can book local cab to visit the place. Entry tickets are quite expensive compared to spend of time here.
  • A must have seen place in thimpu. If you wanna spend some time peacefully, come here and enjoy the serenity. What a big sculpture. But apart from Bhutanese people, foreigners including Indian's need to pay ticket. Which is little bit costly. Approx 300/- per person in Indian money. It has proper opening and closing timings in different season. So it's better to come bit earlier.
  • There are many local people worshipping on their style. Specially elder people. When you visit don't disturb them. Better you get to know the history and meaning of this place. Then you can understand bit of their culture. Better if they can visualize those details relate to this place
  • Well maintained Buddhist temple. A multi storied temple with lot of religious idols and paintings. Entry is free for locals and Nu 300 for tourists.Religious place for locals you may see lot of locals offerings prayers.
  • It is one of the most important religious places for the people residing here. Throughout the day people walk around the perimeter of the Chorten as a holy ritual. It was built in 1974 and is an outstanding illustration of Buddhist culture and architecture. The Chorten in the morning with its golden spire glowing in the sun rays is the most amazing to look at.
