Explore a wildlife reserve dedicated to protecting Bhutan's national animal at Motithang Takin Preserve. Initially a miniature zoo, the site now enjoys protection for environmental and spiritual reasons, letting docile takins roam free and expand in numbers in the surrounding forest. Go on a guided tour through the government-maintained area of 3.4 hectares (8.4 acres), which also contains a traditionally styled entrance, an information center, and lots of native greenery. Wear comfortable walking shoes in order to manage the many steep trails. See Motithang Takin Preserve and all Thimphu has to offer by arranging your trip with our Thimphu travel itinerary planner.

  • Not worth the long walk to go see a large mountain goat! Yes, it's the national animal, endangered, etc.
  • Worth the visit, in particular to have a close encounter with the Takin. There are also other mammals preserved here, but the group of takins is the attraction.
