  • An interesting art school ... has pottery, fabrics, fabrics, paint mandalas. Many young people there, as students. There's a pretty big store, with mandalas painted on canvas and many souvenirs to buy and help keep the site

  • Arrange for a guided tour of the Choki Traditional Art School, where you can see various levels of students learning wood-carving, sewing, painting, drawing, etc. The concentration and skill of the students is fascinating. The school used to focus on boarding male students, but having girls as day students, until a young British girl visited the school and asked why there were no girls. When she was told that the school did not have funds to build a girls' dormitory, the girl went back to London and engaged her friends in bake sales and other projects to raise money for the girls' dorm. Her father was so impressed with his daughter's tenacity and generosity that he donated the remainder of the funds - and today, there is a girls' dorm at the Choki School. There is a gift shop that features work done by the students, so buying products is a great way to support the school, but also have a hand-made piece of Bhutanese art.
  • Impressive to see how serious the students study, and what pieces of art they already have created.
  • Must see when in Bhutan.

Where to stay in Thimphu

As the capital, Thimphu features the largest range of accommodations in the kingdom. Only opening up to international tourism in the 1970's, the list remains relatively small, but the city remains in a period of development, so more options are arriving each year. Take a look along Norzim Lam, the main thoroughfare, for a number of small hotels, both budget and standard. Located close to the main attractions in the city, and overlooking the most attractive public plazas and parks, a small number of charming hotels offer mid-range and luxury rooms, with additional facilities such as pools.
