Changangkha Lhakhang, Thimphu

4.5
#7 of 16 in Sightseeing in Thimphu
Landmark Tourist Spot
One of the oldest Buddhist temples in the region, Changangkha Lhakhang contains intricate internal murals and a statue of Chenrizig, an 11-headed, thousand-armed expression of Avolokitesawara. Built in the 12th century, the temple boasts gold and black prayer wheels and unusually large sacred scriptures. Look for the resident astrologer on the site, who will consider your birth date against various star charts and offer a prayer flag that will benefit you specifically (sold for a nominal fee). • Beautiful monastery perfectly located overlooking Thimphu. Take a walk up the hill, circumnavigate, spinning the prayer wheels near sunset, the views are amazing. The monastery looks great lit up at night too.
  • This popular temple, perched like a fortress on a ridge above central Thimphu, hums with pilgrim activity. It was established in the 12th century on a site chosen by Lama Phajo Drukgom Shigpo, who came from Ralung in Tibet. Parents traditionally come here to get auspicious names for their newborns or blessings for their young children from the protector deity Tamdrin (to the left in the grilled inner sanctum). Children are blessed by a phurba (ritual dagger) and given a sacred thread.
  • This is a monastery located on a hill in Thimpu. it's a peaceful and spiritual place and it also happened to be the first monastery we visited on our trip to Bhutan.
  • Good place to go with family and friends anytime.
  • peaceful monastery in Thimphu; i just walked up to it; also good views of Thimpu from up here; strongly recommend visiting this, while in Thimpu; suggest spending atleast 1 hour in and around the monastery itself;

Where to stay in Thimphu

As the capital, Thimphu features the largest range of accommodations in the kingdom. Only opening up to international tourism in the 1970's, the list remains relatively small, but the city remains in a period of development, so more options are arriving each year. Take a look along Norzim Lam, the main thoroughfare, for a number of small hotels, both budget and standard. Located close to the main attractions in the city, and overlooking the most attractive public plazas and parks, a small number of charming hotels offer mid-range and luxury rooms, with additional facilities such as pools.
