Punakha Dzong, Punakha
(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Admire the elaborate traditional architecture at Punakha Dzong, Bhutan's second-largest and second-oldest dzong. Today the district's administrative center, the fortress-complex dates from 1638 and houses many sacred artifacts belonging to the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism's Drukpa lineage. The six-story structure stands at an elevation of 1,200 (3,900 ft) near the junction of two rivers, surrounded by serene mountains and forests. Inspect the ornate interior, which includes hundreds of religious images, artistic treasures, and wooden, masonry, and metal crafts. Cover your knees and shoulders during your visit. • You instantly fall in love with this place and the surroundings. It seems not too big from outside, but it is BIG. Three courtyards were serene and very aesthetic. A must visit place!
