Punakha Dzong, Punakha

4.8
#1 of 6 in Things to do in Punakha
Admire the elaborate traditional architecture at Punakha Dzong, Bhutan's second-largest and second-oldest dzong. Today the district's administrative center, the fortress-complex dates from 1638 and houses many sacred artifacts belonging to the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism's Drukpa lineage. The six-story structure stands at an elevation of 1,200 (3,900 ft) near the junction of two rivers, surrounded by serene mountains and forests. Inspect the ornate interior, which includes hundreds of religious images, artistic treasures, and wooden, masonry, and metal crafts. Cover your knees and shoulders during your visit. Make Punakha Dzong a centerpiece of your Punakha vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Punakha day trip planning tool .

  • Sound of the river flowing below the connecting bridge, nice ambience and soothing weather...that’s what you get when you are about to enter Punakha Dzong. We also did the water rafting with level 2 rapids. Overall Punakha has an amazing atmosphere with the finest set of Bhutanese people around you. Just one caution, keep mosquito killer aerosols for night and personal insect repellents (creams/lotions) when you go outdoor at night.
  • We went there in the morning. 300Rs per person they are charging but it was good experience. They provide 1 guide too. He answered very Patiently to all our questions. View from one of the temple is beautiful and inside it's very peaceful and clean. It's worth to visit if you are in Punakha and have at least 1 hour free.
  • Impressive wooden structure and great views. This dzong is connected by beautiful wooden bridge over the junction of two rivers. One of the beautiful and must visit place in Bhutan.Visit this place with local guide so you can know story behind the paintings.
  • Oct 2017. One of the grand Dzong to visit, the other grand Dzong is in Paro. The first Dzong in Bhutan serving dual function, as a district office and monastery. Intricate Bhutanese architecture. This Dzong was used to defend against the enemies during the war, and Bhutan won. This Dzong was stated to be “sitting on the tusk of the elephant”. There are beautiful views from this Dzong. A worthwhile visit.
  • Very beautiful place. You can see the full history of lord buddha. Entry ticket is Rs.300 per person and closed after 5 pm. Very well maintained nice view amazing place.

Where to stay in Punakha

Though a handful of hotels and resorts exist in Punakha, many visitors choose to stay in national capital Thimphu or a nearby town or village. Thimphu has the widest selection of accommodations, but you may want to consider one of the cozy spots tucked in the valley, just a 20- to 25-minute drive from Punakha. If you're having trouble finding lodging in Punakha, take a look at the nearby towns of Wolakha, Sopsokha, and Lobesa.
