Chimi L'hakhang Temple, Punakha

#3 of 7 in Things to do in Punakha
See the many phallic statues at Chimi L'hakhang Temple, a shrine of a fertility saint. Standing on a round hillock amid rice paddies and mustard fields, the modest temple contains a 25 cm (10 in) tall wood and ivory lingam, the centerpiece for those seeking a blessing for fertility from a resident monk. Built in 1499 by Drukpa Kunley--the so-called "saint of 5,000 women" who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan--the temple gained notoriety for its fertility wish grants to childless couples. Local villagers continue this tradition, evidenced in the colorful lingams painted on their houses as well as many funny phallic signposts and memorabilia sold in the village. • "Fertility Temple" (L ' Chimi hakang) visited most of the couples from all over the world who can not have children! In the temple there is there is a Fertility God and monks who drums and blowing into the instrument and so should the couple be blessed! Photo ban inside the temple! Couples who had children after the blessing, has sent over photos of the Temple in the roofing business and there were many photos from couples in the U.S. Australia and Europe, the album, which really had children after visits to "the fertility God" my guide had to take out the album outside the monastery and he took photos, which I can't send over to Trip Advisor-sorry!

  • My favorite Lhakhang/temple in Bhutan, great stories and legends behind it. Its a nice walk up the hill and the valley to get there. And of course it's the place for all of the phallus souvenirs you could possibly want.
  • Oct 2017. A temple to visit to ask for protections from all harm and danger. Located on a small hilltop. After the temple visit, can walk through the rice fields and witness the rice harvesting and a beautiful sunset. The walk should be done during early morning just after sunrise or evening just before sunset, otherwise it will be sunburning.
  • We went there around 9am .. it was like a trekking to reach there. Path is somewhere muddy but easy to walk. No stiff hiking is there. It require 1 hour minimum to reach and come back. Inside photography is not allowed and no such view is present from surroundings. If you believe or want to have some trekking visit there..
  • A temple built on a mound where Lam Drukpa Kuenley aka Divine Madman subdued a demon who tried to escape from his spiritual wrath. Don't go with your family members. You can find numerous graffiti on its way.
  • The famous Chili Lhakhang temple where blessings are given to people looking to conceive - it is famous for it's powers to cure infertility!
