Chimi L'hakhang Temple, Punakha
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
See the many phallic statues at Chimi L'hakhang Temple, a shrine of a fertility saint. Standing on a round hillock amid rice paddies and mustard fields, the modest temple contains a 25 cm (10 in) tall wood and ivory lingam, the centerpiece for those seeking a blessing for fertility from a resident monk. Built in 1499 by Drukpa Kunley--the so-called "saint of 5,000 women" who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan--the temple gained notoriety for its fertility wish grants to childless couples. Local villagers continue this tradition, evidenced in the colorful lingams painted on their houses as well as many funny phallic signposts and memorabilia sold in the village. 切米拉... read more »

Taeyoung KimChimi Lacan, the symbolic culture as a symbol of fertility is that worship the genitals, but the larger meaning. The actual number of infertile couple come/I pray IM back kids, however, have faith in prayer. Interesting cultural experience.show original
