Chimi L'hakhang Temple, Punakha
(4.2/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
See the many phallic statues at Chimi L'hakhang Temple, a shrine of a fertility saint. Standing on a round hillock amid rice paddies and mustard fields, the modest temple contains a 25 cm (10 in) tall wood and ivory lingam, the centerpiece for those seeking a blessing for fertility from a resident monk. Built in 1499 by Drukpa Kunley--the so-called "saint of 5,000 women" who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan--the temple gained notoriety for its fertility wish grants to childless couples. Local villagers continue this tradition, evidenced in the colorful lingams painted on their houses as well as many funny phallic signposts and memorabilia sold in the village.
