Kyichu Lhakhang, Paro

4.2
#3 of 6 in Historic Sites in Paro
Turn a prayer wheel at Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Bhutan. Originally built in the 7th century, it was one of the 108 temples made to pin down a giant legendary ogress who was preventing the spread of Buddhism. Numerous prayer wheels with colorful ornaments and butter-lit lamps decorate the inner courtyard, where you can observe elderly pilgrims spinning them. A quiet and peaceful place, the temple has simple architecture housing a collection of 11 Buddha statues. Two orange trees in the courtyard are believed to bear fruit throughout the year. This is a beautiful and wonderful temple. It is small and intimate. The detailed decoration was amazing and the story surrounding the temple is fascinating. After 10 days of temples in Bhutan, this was my favorite. It's a big WOW - spiritually speaking.

Where to stay in Paro

A popular tourist and pilgrimage spot, Paro offers a range of luxurious accommodations in the form of resort-style hotels and boutique spas. You'll find these scattered around the valley, but not in the main downtown area. If you're looking for less-exclusive hotels, check the hillside to the west of town, which offers great views of the valley. A number of mid-range hotels also offer panoramic views. For budget-oriented travelers, there are few guesthouses in town.
