Chele La Pass, Paro

4.5
#3 of 18 in Outdoors in Bhutan
Marvel at snow-clad rugged mountain peaks surrounding you at Chele La Pass, one of the highest observation decks in Bhutan and the highest one you can reach by a motor vehicle. Standing at 3,988 m (13,084 ft), the highest motorway in the country offers spectacular views of mountains and valleys with yaks grazing in the distance. Observe a thick forest of poles with fluttering prayer flags next to the road, which locals put up to scare demons. The two-hour ride from Paro runs through thick forests, passing scenic waterfalls, rivers, and rare flowers. Bring some warm clothes. • It was cloudy and windy, I could not see anything. And on top of that it was very cold. Would recommend only when the weather is good.  more »

  • At 13000ft above sea level and the highest pass in Bhutan it cannot be any better. A must visit place if you ever visit Bhutan. You can view the highest peak of Bhutan from here. A DSLR is a must if you wish to capture the depths of beauty of this scenic location. Plus we found snow on the way which made the journey more wholesome.
  • Its about 13000 ft above sea level. View of chele la pass is just awesome. If you are lucky you can see the Himalayan mountains from here. Its a very popular place amongst traveller who visits Paro. This place enough facilities for travellers, this should be improved.

Where to stay in Paro

A popular tourist and pilgrimage spot, Paro offers a range of luxurious accommodations in the form of resort-style hotels and boutique spas. You'll find these scattered around the valley, but not in the main downtown area. If you're looking for less-exclusive hotels, check the hillside to the west of town, which offers great views of the valley. A number of mid-range hotels also offer panoramic views. For budget-oriented travelers, there are few guesthouses in town.
