La Porte Du Non Retour, Ouidah

4.2
See the gate of no return of Africa's transatlantic slavery at La Porte Du Non Retour, an arched monument on a beach where slaves were marched onto boats taking them overseas to the Western world. Inaugurated in 1995, the monument serves as a solemn reminder of Benin's 200-year involvement in the slave trade, and marks the place of a slave auction shared by the Portuguese, French, and British. See the statue of a kneeling enslaved man, his hands tied to his back, and the tree of forgetfulness memorial. • We had a little overcast to walk to our hotel "the secret garden" to the door of no return. (9km to go and for the return). our guide successful motorcycle stops and we giving explanations on the trees and deities. Hurry to contemplate, the statues age well!

  • In the different activities of Ouidah, there are premises which propose to the guide. And this is clearly advised, unless you have a driver/guide. It begins with a space followed by the road taken by slaves (several Km) on which there are many statues with their meanings. And ends at the level of the waterfront with the door of no return. No sign telling the story. No entry fee, free activity.

  • It helped open my eyes to the impact of slave trade! Stories about the point of no return filled my heart with heaviness!  more »

  • This was very insightful! You think you know when you've read but there's nothing like seeing history with your own eyes. Every African person or person of African descent needs to make it a point to visit sites that hold history of the trans Atlantic slave trade & colonialism for your own enlightenment.
  • Go for the history and the location... The monument itself is symbolic of harsher times we all need to bear in mind in our modern times.
  • One of Benin oldest and best preserved historical slave-sending posts. The void beyond the Horizon is overwhelming.
  • Lovely and serene place....Beaches quite ok but could not swim....
  • It was an emotional experience. To think that back then when u get to that point u can never see your family again.
