Lac Nokoue, Ganvie

#2 of 6 in Parks in Benin
See the one-of-a-kind lake spreading under the Venice of Africa, Lac Nokoue. Extending 11 km (6.8 mi) long and 20 km (12.4 mi) wide, the lake serves as a chief source of food to the town above it, as well as the main nesting site for many different species of birds. Take a guided canoe trip, or board one of the fishing boats to learn about the unique ways of fishing here. Alternatively, sit back on shore and admire the scenic view of the lake and nature around it. • Lake Nokoué is especially interesting for the visit of the Lake City of Ganvié. This city of 30,000 inhabitants which has its origin to the slave who took refuge on the Lake to escape their sale, is the largest Lake City in Africa. The tour is a boat with a guide from the shore. Through the plots where fishermen trap the fish (unique economic resource of the city). After 15-20 minutes of crossed, we reach the city. All activities are present: shops, schools, places of worship, hotel, health centre. All of this in more or less well-preserved houses on stilts. Residents greet you with a smile, but mostly stick to them taking pictures of faces. The guide will take you in souvenir shops. Accept even if you don't buy anything. The walk is done through the channels. Some artificial islands have been created and a real island is present (it is originally from the city).

  • A very Nice touristic site. The lake Nokoue offers a wonderful view and is worth to visit. I like it!
  • Seeing how this people live on water is amazing. They've got markets, restaurants, hotels and hospitals.... everything you can think of having in a town on land. The women drive out into town to trade and return in the evenings in their small canoes. We see people selling small items like fruits and vegetables around to people in their community. A great place to visit.. if you want to see nature at its best here in Cotonou Benin. Would love to visit again.
