Those interested in Mayan history will be find a lot to appreciate at Marco Gonzalez Maya Site, where 2,000-year-old ruins lie tucked within a mangrove forest. The site offers guided archaeological tours, as well as ecotours focusing on the local wildlife. Along the way, informative signs explain the history of the site--home to some 20,000 Mayans in 100 BCE. Tours include the performance of a traditional dance by native dancers. Bring plenty of insect repellent and wear long bottoms to protect against the rampant mosquitoes. Access to the ruins was nearly impossible before the relatively recent addition of a drawbridge, which today serves many visitors.
