  • We did this cave after the visit to caracol. Expectations were low, but we were in for a pleasant surprise! It is a relatively small cave, open on both sides, but with high ceilings and beautiful stalactites. In the cave, water flows and you have yourself a beach. Excellent for quick stop: 30 mins or so

  • En route to the Caracol, we stop at the police station that we must provide an escort. The area seems to be theatre of incursions of bandits Guatemalans that border looking for looting of animals and plants. Well, it seems very unlikely. We are told that we have to wait for an hour, the escort will be available at 9.30, not before. To pass the time we go to a nearby cave, the Rio Frio Cave. At the bottom of a small Valley surrounded by green flows a stream, but, when I turn on the right, I see the immense cavern from which, a little further away, the river flows; a sort of gigantic stone mouth wide open, from whose upper lip hanging plant burrs up almost to the ground. We are speechless and then we enter along a path that runs along the cave. All around small stalactites by tenuous colors pink, green and Purple Fairy make the place, how often are the caves which evoke childish fantasies. Here though, surprisingly, the glow of another entry. In fact, we are taking a giant natural tunnel, and we see the green of the forest at the other end. Truly a wonderful place for those who are weaned from intact and mysterious nature, a place that will give you a feeling of discovery, adventure, in a natural setting of unusual, simple, primitive beauty. Worth a detour.
