Caracol, Cayo

#2 of 14 in Wildlife in Cayo
Admire the artistry and scale of the country's largest Mayan archaeological site, Caracol. Now surrounded by dense jungle, this was once one of the most important and powerful Mayan cities, covering an area of 177 sq km (68.3 sq mi) with a population of around 100,000 people. The site today includes 53 carved stone monuments, and numerous tombs and burial sites, all linked up by well-signposted trails through the jungle rich in wildlife. Head to the visitor center to plan your route through the old city, and to learn about the history of the buildings and contemporary issues in excavation and archaeology. • The most beautiful mayan site in belize. The road to go to Caracol is very bad ( 2 hours of unpaved road, you must have a 4WD) but it really worth it !  more »
  • Went here today. It rained lightly most of the drive up and back and while there. The problem with going on a rainy day is that the stones/steps are more slippery. You can still climb the buildings, i...  more »
  • About 3 hours from San Ignacio, I believe they are the largest ruins uncovered in Belize. Caracol was famous for its wars with Tikal. Unfortunately if you have visited other Mayan sites in central ame...  more »

  • What an awe-inspiring site (and sight). We visited Caracol to both bird-watch and see the grounds. Incredible. The different complexes are well displayed; it is remote enough to not be crowded — we were there pretty early during the week and I could count maybe 15 people there. If you want an opportunity to tour a major Mayan ruin without the crowds, this is your place. Highly recommend. Oh, and the bird-watching is excellent too!
  • The 35 mile drive from San Ignacio takes almost 3 hours. Plan ahead if your going without a group. You should show up at the Belize Defense Force (BDF) Checkpoint by 9am...They 'escort" you to the ruins. Don't worry if your late..I was and they let me thru. I had to take their soldiers a box of chicken carcass. I figured they wouldn't let their guys go hungry and since the entrusted me with their lunch and no escort. My wife on the other hand was nervous. The entire road there has steep drop offs on one side and reverse pot holes (boulders really). Exciting adventure.
  • Great site. Would get five stars if it wasn't for the long bumpy ride to get there.
  • Beautiful grounds. Amazing history and architectural marvel. The road was rough but the getting there is half the fun. So worthwhile.
  • What a site to see!!!!! So many ruins to visit. This place is off the beaten path 50 miles or so of dirt road over 13 concrete bridges with no guard rails, just wide enough for a car. Some are short some are long. Rained all the way up making the dirt road pool with water and making the off-road ride just as interesting. This place is about 3 hours from Black Rock Lodge which is where we stayed and used their super-excellent guides. Climbing up the temples was quite interesting while being slippery from the rain. The height is just enormous. Never thought I'd climb it but we did. At the top the views were stunning. Guatemala just 3 miles off in the distance. Very educational. This is really deep into the woods and takes quite a bit of time.
