#2 of 23 in Wildlife in Cayo
Admire the artistry and scale of the country's largest Mayan archaeological site, Caracol. Now surrounded by dense jungle, this was once one of the most important and powerful Mayan cities, covering an area of 177 sq km (68.3 sq mi) with a population of around 100,000 people. The site today includes 53 carved stone monuments, and numerous tombs and burial sites, all linked up by well-signposted trails through the jungle rich in wildlife. Head to the visitor center to plan your route through the old city, and to learn about the history of the buildings and contemporary issues in excavation and archaeology. • This place is unbelievable!! The ruins are amazing!! Rent a car with a full tank of gas and plan for an all day experience. Leave early from San Ignacio around 7, because the road is rough and during the rainy season, at times can be really muddy. Pack your lunch and plenty of water and enjoy. The drive is through beautiful jungle and you will generally see wildlife on the way.
  • What an awe-inspiring site (and sight). We visited Caracol to both bird-watch and see the grounds. Incredible. The different complexes are well displayed; it is remote enough to not be crowded — we were there pretty early during the week and I could count maybe 15 people there. If you want an opportunity to tour a major Mayan ruin without the crowds, this is your place. Highly recommend. Oh, and the bird-watching is excellent too!
  • Really nice and hidden place! Rent a car in San Ignacio and go there early (leave San Ignacio at 6:30 am). Afterwards you still have time to visit some waterfalls!
  • The road to get there is BUMPY! Worth the trip. It's a huge area. Bring an umbrella.
  • The 35 mile drive from San Ignacio takes almost 3 hours. Plan ahead if your going without a group. You should show up at the Belize Defense Force (BDF) Checkpoint by 9am...They 'escort" you to the ruins. Don't worry if your late..I was and they let me thru. I had to take their soldiers a box of chicken carcass. I figured they wouldn't let their guys go hungry and since the entrusted me with their lunch and no escort. My wife on the other hand was nervous. The entire road there has steep drop offs on one side and reverse pot holes (boulders really). Exciting adventure.
