4.9/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web
Embark on an adventurous hike through Actun Tunichil Muknal, a cave brimming with Mayan history. Be aware that traversing the cave requires a decent level of fitness, as you'll find yourself climbing, squeezing through tight spaces, and in rare cases swimming to explore the sites. The cave system spreads through about 4.8 km (3 mi) with a river flowing through it for approximately 3.2 km (2 mi). Be on the lookout for large spiders, freshwater crabs, and lots of bats. The highlight for most visitors is the undisturbed skeletal remains and pottery of Mayan origin, such as the "crystal maiden," whose calcified bones give off a crystalized, sparkly appearance. With our online itinerary creator, San Antonio attractions like Actun Tunichil Muknal can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Absolutely amazing experience exploring the caves underground here. 1/3 of a mile splashing into the system, then climbed to drier ground. Many broken pots, skeletons, and natural formations.
  • LOVED this place and this activity. I've done many adventurous things, seen amazing things and the ATM caves rates near the top of all. Aaron from MayaWalks was an excellent tour guide. I just wish I could stay a few days in there. Really special and fun.
  • Great spelunking experience! Some swimming, lots of climbing and wading- great archeological site with relics and skeletal remains!
  • I loved it super much ! The best cave that I had been in my life so far ! One of the TOP attractions that people must visit !!!!!
  • Very cool.... spend a few days in the area if possible... book your own local flight and see the ruins nearby. some awesome people, pricing, sights, hotels if you find your own way. take a real adventure. See if you get lucky. (Wanna bring an awesome gift for your tour guide take a new headlamp as a gift... Might could trade it for a spot on a tour if you can't book one as they are over booked at times.) Considered building in time to cross the border and see Tikal. Taxis are cheap and double as regional tour guides. (If you are not the adventurous type... ignore this post.)
