Altun Ha, Belize District

4.6
#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Belize District
Visit Altun Ha, the remains of an ancient Mayan city boasting two main plazas and 13 structures, including a temple. You can now climb the taller temple, once an important ceremonial building, and enjoy the view from the altar atop. A market just outside the ruins sells local handicrafts. See the large water reservoir known as “Rockstone Pond,” which is the English translation of the site’s name. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including armadillos, foxes, and white-tailed deer. Due to the site’s location, it's best to visit with a guide. • A relatively well preserved or restored and well-maintained Maya system. Not very big, the life of the Mayans conveys but a good overview. Impressive copy of the Jade head in the adjacent, small museum. Around the unit the usual souvenirs shops and a few food stalls with exorbitant prices. The visitor should be possible but not at lunch time there. The system offers little shade and at 30 °, it should have at least enough degrees to drink it.

  • If you go on your own, do not use the Exclusive Belize Tours operator do not maintain what is agreed we were promised in addition to maya site the river tour and the tour of the city in three hours, instead we only saw the site (and a Spaniard were promised also the beach with all included gathered to pay entrance and sunbeds) then get a receipt and make sure that what has been said is as written. Anyway the site deserved the pyramids can be scaled and there is around a beautiful flora and fauna and an English speaking guide was prepared.

  • Well, our tour guide was very good. She made it interesting. Overall, average. You won’t be blown away with anything here. It’s just nice to say that you’ve been here once, that’s it.  more »

  • The artisans had many quality handcrafted items to choose from. There are several vendors so try to spread the wealth by purchasing from each person if you can as this is how they are supporting themselves. Being a fellow artist I admired everyone's work.
  • This is a beautifully preserved and peaceful site. It is partially explored and excavated. There are a few of the larger ones that have not been dug out or are partially dug up. There are a number of household mounds that have not been dug up. There are two large courtyards each surrounded by ruins. A couple of ruins are currently being be explored. Also, there is a large tourist shopping area.
  • This was beautiful! It is a once in a lifetime place to visit. Just amazing what the Mayan people could build without the modern equipment.
  • Very cool historic destination! Your able to climb the temples and depending on your tour guide you get to hear a lot of the history of it. We toured with VIV Tours of Belize and our guide, Abner, was fantastic. You do want to make sure you bring sunscreen, bug spray, and water.
  • great site, we had a wonderful tour guide. one of my favorite sites that I have been to. Not a long way from the port and there was plenty of shade
