St John's Cathedral, Belize City

3.6
#2 of 6 in Sightseeing in Belize City
Natural History Museum Religious Site
St John's Cathedral stands as a reminder of Belize's colonial history, while also serving as a spiritual sanctuary for the local community. Built by slaves using brick ballast brought from Britain between 1812-1820, the church was the first built in the colony of British Honduras, and the only Anglican cathedral outside of England where kings were crowned. High ceilings, complemented by rustic mahogany and sapodilla woodwork, give the church an airy feel, while the true show-stopper, the ancient pipe organ, rests on the balcony. Don't miss the oldest cemetery in the country, Yarborough Cemetery, also built using slave labor. • Listen to the history of the site and visit it allows you to connect with the colonial Belize. The way in which she was built is amazing and I think that it should be exploited with more momentum. See it makes you think that there are not many differences with other British locations.

  • Is the Church is said to be the oldest in Belize. Cute brick. Pipe organ is located on the second floor, is open on Sunday. Church around and around the grave, feel the history.

  • The Church is dedicated to John the Baptist. It is probably the oldest preserved building from the English colonial period in Belize. Built by mostly slaves between 1812 and 1820. The most exterior walls are of ship ballast stone in the Interior of mahogany and the BreiapfelbaumHolz, it is relatively easy gestalted.

  • It's a great attraction due to its preserved state. The exterior alone is quite impressive. However, you may not be able to view the interior if there is no service (mass) or another scheduled event.
  • it was wonderful enjoy it
  • Recently went to a wedding here. The Church is historic and it has been kept in good conditions.
  • Simply Royal and historic....old and elegant and still serving the Lords words.
  • Went to church on Easter Sunday
