St John's Cathedral, Belize City

Inspirock Rating:
3.8/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web
St John's Cathedral stands as a reminder of Belize's colonial history, while also serving as a spiritual sanctuary for the local community. Built by slaves using brick ballast brought from Britain between 1812-1820, the church was the first built in the colony of British Honduras, and the only Anglican cathedral outside of England where kings were crowned. High ceilings, complemented by rustic mahogany and sapodilla woodwork, give the church an airy feel, while the true show-stopper, the ancient pipe organ, rests on the balcony. Don't miss the oldest cemetery in the country, Yarborough Cemetery, also built using slave labor. • Did a city tour of Beliz City and took us past this old cathedral. What is very worn and decline but still nice to see, there are many other more guards and great but this was still worth seeing.

  • Just and old and dilaped church in the poor section of Belize City, which is a very poor city. Not what you think of when you think of a Cathedral.
  • It's a great attraction due to its preserved state. The exterior alone is quite impressive. However, you may not be able to view the interior if there is no service (mass) or another scheduled event.
  • Recently went to a wedding here. The Church is historic and it has been kept in good conditions.
  • Simply Royal and historic....old and elegant and still serving the Lords words.
  • Went to church on Easter Sunday
  • Beautiful school ever.
