#3 of 12 in Breweries in West Flanders Province
Saint-Sixtus Abbey of Westvleteren, which belongs to the Cistercians of Strict Observance, or Trappists, is a Roman Catholic abbey located in Westvleteren, in the Belgian Province of West Flanders. The abbey is famous for its spiritual life, characterised by prayer, reading, and manual work, the three basic elements of Trappist life. It has also a reputation for its brewery, one of the several breweries of Trappist beer in Belgium.History9th to 18th centuriesThe earliest traces of a monastic presence at the location of the present day abbey date back to 1260, although the '', which is mentioned in a deed of 806 (from the abbey of Saint-Omer), was probably located in the same area (known at that time as Fletrinio''). From 1260 to 1355 there was a small community of nuns on the side of the Catsberg. That site was abandoned, but between 1610 and 1784 a monastery of the Bridgettines (the Order of the Most Holy Saviour) was located on what is called "Fathers' Corner".19th centuryIn 1831 the hermit Jan-Baptist Victoor was joined by a prior and a few monks in the woods of Saint Sixtus, and this group developed into the later Trappist abbey of Saint Sixtus in Westvleteren. In 1838 the Westvleteren Brewery was founded inside the abbey precinct. In 1839 a primary school was established and in 1840 the old church of the priory was built. In 1850, a group of monks from Westvleteren founded Scourmont Abbey on the barren plateau of Scourmont near Chimay. In 1871 the priory was granted the status of abbey by Pope Pius IX. Between 1875 and 1878 a model farm was developed as an example for the region.

  • We were lucky enough to be able to attend the afternoon prayer inside the abbey. This is not usually possible unless you know someone. On top of that, we were lucky enough to get through on their beer...  more »
  • What a beautiful place this is. You can relax and beautiful prayer. Silence is golden, especially in the Guest House itself and during the meals. But if you go to that Abbey, then you know that. In the summer you can sit in the garden, but then silence the message as well. Only in the Hall of the old port, which can be reached through the garden, guests can speak each other. What happens, especially at night while enjoying a Trappist beer of the House, which is considered the best beer in the world. The food is good and simple, it tastes usually fine and the guest rooms are simple but clean and tidy. It is limited wheelchair access, a person with a disability can get quite right, there is one room with shower and toilet, the rest to the plumbing in the House. All in all a great place to go on a retreat.

  • Me and my wife on a Sunday around 12:00. We rented a car in Brussels and arrive without too much difficulty by typing the address in the car which hit the address that play on the google phone. The Abbey was not open to visitation, but has a restaurant next door called In the Vedre, where you can eat great snacks and take as many beers can afford! RS of course that the menu is pretty simple, and main attraction is even Westvleteren XII known as one of the best beers in the world. Inside the restaurant is a little shop where you can buy 2 boxes of Westvleteren per person, each with 6 units, as well as products made there such as cheese, salami, mustard, etc. All of excellent quality.

  • Although the coveted 'Westy 12' can be bought in the cafe across the road, arranging purchase of it by the crate from the Abbey is well worth it if you have the persistence. Truly among the best beers in the world!
  • Unique Westvleteren 12 and 8! I recommend!
  • Theres not much to say. Food it's ok. Beer Goooood! Even though this beer is good for my taste I like St. Bernard more.

  • They say it is the best beer in the world. It definitely is a great one😀
