  • The Cathedral is at present (for over 10 years ...) restored and this allows only a small part of the Interior. The Roman ship was open. This space is remarkably big, high and full of light: this not in a Romanesque building. There are excavations and along the entire length of the building is a deep slot visible: on information boards give figures and texts explaining that traces of the past: the Roman baths and the first churches that used to be on this place. The transept was fully completed. Also in the Gothic choir was full of scaffolding and fences ... but you could still see the evolution of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and follow. Also the exterior is restored. Most towers are packed up and around the Church is a huge fence. On the positive side, one quite that fence as an exhibition space and used space info: photos and lyrics tell about the history of the building, the creation of the diocese and on the ongoing restoration. We entered the Cathedral through the square next to the Bishop's Palace: by the narthex on the west facade. Such a front hall is typical of early Christian churches and m.i. rather rare in our country. Next to the Church is also another fine group of statues reminiscent of Rogier van der Weyden. It is of course unfortunate that so many pieces of the Church closed. We gave now 3 to 5. After the full reopening there will be undoubtedly a much higher rating as possible.

  • Impressive building, roman art, but in full restoration, so you cannot see the whole volume of the church. It will take some more years apparently before it is fully restored.  more »
  • Unfortunately there's very little to see inside at the moment and probably won't be for a couple more years at least. From the outside, you can appreciate the grandeur but only a small section of the interior is open while restoration takes place. If you are in the city, it's worth going to see, but it is probably not worth the effort to go to Tournai specifically to see it right now.
  • Superb cathedral in the heart of Tournai in Roman Gothic architecture. The process of restoration takes from it's beauty.
  • A jewel of architecture. A story that defies time. A height to the greatness of the Church. 5 spires including 4 without bells told me there when I was a kid! ;)
