Musée des Beaux-arts, Tournai

#3 of 7 in Museums in Tournai
The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tournai, Belgium, is an art museum. The inception of the museum was in the beginning of the 20th century when Henri Van Cutsem, a Belgian art collector, offered his collection to the city of Tournai in 1905. The collection contained important works of important 19th century French painters like Manet, Monet, Seurat and others. The Belgian Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta started drafting a new building that would contain the Van Cutsem donation and other holdings already owned by the city of Tournai but the First World War intervened and construction was delayed. Horta abandoned his first designs made in a typical Art Nouveau style. The building that finally opened in 1928 is executed in a more classical and linear style typically for the work of Horta in the post-war period (cf. Palais des Beaux-Arts / Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussels).

  • A lovely building, not wheelchair friendly by virtue of cobbled approaches and very steep ramps. A lot of building, for a small but iinteresting collection, poor lighting and lack of translated descri...  more »
  • A number of beautiful works in the museum: oa 2 x Manet, Monet, Seurat &. The building is there reasonable terminate upon, the exposure is downright bad. The works deserve better. One would be better to transfer a number of works from other collections, building (also the floor) fully renovate, so that the building by Horta back. Then you get a real attraction instead of everything. Parking in front of the museum also does affect the building. There is however a large car park at 50 m.

  • Small museum, the only one in Belgium by Victor Horta designed. Wonderful collection, would be much gekender in our country. What a masterpieces. And then to know that only 5% of the pieces. Anyway! The exposure, the halls, the framework, ... poor. Even in a developing country would cause. Now, understand that this is a major remodeling will undergo. So we come back again in the future.

  • A fairly small museum, but a wide selection of works. Some old masters, some impressionist, including a Monet, Seurat. Impossible to miss Tom Frantzen's sculptures, some cocks and a flying hippo. An enjoyable visit.
  • Super Victor Horta art nouveau building
  • Rare bad museum! I have almost 700 museums and exhibitions visited and never have I seen such a disgraceful furnished museum with a rare poorly maintained collection, which originally actually a very nice collection must have been. There are only two working in top-condition, presumably because that loan be regularly and elsewhere have been restored. Some paintings are almost out of the list. Others are completely distorted. Climate control is not there, just thick heating radiators. The walls are painted in bright colors, totally unsuitable for art against headache. There are walls added that block the passage to the halls and the light. In the middle of a room is a building, thereby you can put the two giant format paintings only from the side view and not straight from the front. We walked out with tears in the eyes because of how they treated the art here, we have never experienced such a thing: really a shame!!!!
