Abbaye d'Aulne, Thuin
(3.6/5 based on 50 reviews on the web)
Aulne Abbey was a Cistercian monastery between Thuin and Landelies on the Sambre in the Bishopric of Liège in Belgium.HistoryOriginally it was a Benedictine monastery, founded by Saint Landelinus about 637. Before 974 the Benedictines were replaced by secular clerics leading a common life, who, however, embraced the Rule of St. Augustine in 1144.At the instance of Henry de Leyen, Bishop of Liège, it came into the hands of Cistercian monks from Clairvaux in 1147, under Franco de Morvaux as its first Cistercian abbot. From that time onwards it flourished as a Cistercian monastery. The French burned it at the end of the 18th century, only a short time after it had been rebuilt on a larger scale. The library, which contained 40,000 books and 5,000 manuscripts, was also destroyed.

  • The site deserves to be valued but worth a visit. Attention that is not always open. Good ride

  • Just the right mix of romanticism and history in this site where the ruins of the once proud and big abbey of Aulne are to be found. Still not very well known and a bit off the beaten track. There is ...  more »
  • I had the fortune of going one day when there was a kind of market, flea market, artisan type middle ages and eat oysters with champagne at 9 in the morning, and all in a magnificent setting, mixture of ancient architectural sample and enchanting landscapes. The place, located on the banks of a river, has several restaurants and walks along the River, and of course visit the old monastery.

  • Expensive, especially for a quite passable food. Too savory dishes, waiting extremely long (not counting the oversights). In short, only the frame is.
