Mu.ZEE, Ostend

(3.4/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
The Mu.ZEE is a museum in Ostend, Belgium, specialized in Belgian art from 1830 on. It was created in 2008 by fusion of the former Provinciaal Museum voor Moderne Kunst (PMMK, the museum for modern art of the Province of West-Flanders) and the Museum voor Schone Kunsten Oostende (Museum of Fine Arts Ostend), both located in Ostend. The Museum has two dependencies, the Ensorhuis (house of James Ensor) in Ostend, and the Permekemuseum in Jabbeke. Mu.ZEE is an abbreviation of "Kunstmuseum aan Zee" ("Art Museum at the Sea").HistoryThe history of the Museum of Fine Arts of the Stad Ostend starts in 1885, with a large gift by a private art collector. In 1897, a museum was created to house the collection. An airraid in 1940 destroyed the library and archive and some 400 works of art. A new building was opened in 1958. The collection is largely centered on artists from Ostend, mainly James Ensor, Constant Permeke and Léon Spilliaert. The collection of the Provincial Museum started in 1957, with the regular acquisition of works by young artists. In 1960, the house of Constant Permeke and a collection of his work was bought, and turned into the Permekemuseum. From 1962 until 1985, the main collection was exhibited in Bruges and Ypres, until a definitive location was found in 1986 in Ostend.

  • Ensor is at home in a museum. It is a small but fine museum. It gives a good overview of the artists on the coast such as Ensor, Spilleart, Permeke, ...

  • This museum is well worth it. The wing with works by Ensor and Spilliaert offers a varied overview of their work and gives the visitor also interesting background information about the life and work of these two artists. Only this exhibition it is already worth to visit this museum! On the other floor of this interesting building are varied exhibitions. The exposition of Schmalzigaug was quite extensive and nicely composed. Gave a good picture of the development of this painter.

  • Very complicated to explain and understand what there was to see. Not in french, okay, but not even the idea of us speak English. The Museum is labyrinthine, we don't understand how the collections are organized. This looks like a department store. A floor was closed. An expo on a futuristic Belgian who didn't like us. Fortunately a few Ensor and Spillaert

  • Superb pieces from James Ensor, Léon Spilliaert and Constant Permeke exposed permanently, next to temporary expositions.
  • Very extensive collection (too much to see in one time) in a beautiful, sleek, modern setting. Regularly very fascinating exhibitions. Worth a visit every year.

  • Were it not for the fact of Spilliaert, I gave 1 star. Temporary exhibition ceramics was more interesting.
