Trip Planner: Europe / Belgium / Flanders / Antwerp Province / Olmen / Zoos & Aquariums / Olmense Zoo
Olmen Zoo is a zoo in the Belgian village Olmen which is part of the town of Balen. The zoo was opened in 1976 by Louis Roothooft, a former captain. He used to live near Antwerp where he had a private collection of foreign animals. He bought some land in Olmen and moved his animals to the new location. The Olmen Zoo was founded. As Roothooft loved the circus a big circus tent was soon placed. Each day the animal carers did performance acts with the animals. Roothooft died mid 1990s and the park was sold to the family Verheyen in 1995.The new owners also had a private collection of animals which were now transported to Olmen. The park was in a bad condition due to mismanagement of Roothooft, cages were not adapted to the animal needs and the amount of customers was too low to make sufficient profits. That's why the park was renovated. The investments did succeed: the amount of visitors raised from 9000 to 200.000 on year base. The circus tent was removed and no more acts were given. The zoo is now specialized in felidae: African lions, Siberian tigers, white Bengal tigers, snow leopards, black leopards, Eurasian lynx, Servals, caracals and cougars. The zoo has more than 200 different birds such as parrots, owls, eagles, flamingos, gruiformes and threskiornithidae.. The zoo has of course other animals such as simian, rodents, small mammals, deers, snakes and bears.Plan to see Olmense Zoo and other attractions that appeal to you using our Olmen vacation generator.

The animal park is mss not so large, but beautiful landscaped and numbered. On arrival you get a clear plan with it. Very nice for smaller kids who the long distances in other larger Zoo's not so good. Public gardens, paths and animal cages are very neat. Both of us an inch thick for the Olmense zoo!
Lots of tigers and other cat like animals. Started small as a private zoo but nowdays it's a proper zoo. Entrance price around 19€. Small reduction and free parking if tickets are booked online.
Very expensive junk food in the cafeteria. Very expensive entrance fee with parking fee on top. Like the high-enough fee was not enough. Otherwise, the animals are quite interesting, especially, bears, giraffes and elephants. Very nice and large play area for children with a goat pen.
It's not a big zoo but it is packed with a lot of nice animals. You might say that some parts of the zoo are still a bit old or could use some updates. But the animals are very approachable and the environment is very good. Overall a recommended spot to spend some time with your children. Also not that crowded compared to the bigger zoos in Belgium.
A very nice place for all ages!
Not a huge zoo. Easy to do in a day. Kids loved it here. The animals were active and approachable. There are little benches all throughout the park with nice views. We only had a pack of fries but they where well made and the price wasn't crazy like in big zoos.
