Citadelle (Citadel), Namur

(4.3/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Dating all the way back to the Roman era, Citadelle (Citadel), also known as "Castle of Namur," serves as one of the largest fortresses in Europe. Originally a protective space for military postings, the castle today is a tourist attraction and occasionally is rented out for events. Walk through the premises of the castle and explore the original rugged structure of the fortress walls. Next, go through the underground passageways, or "The Termite Nest of Europe," below the castle's grounds. Walking through the outdoor gardens is a great way to end your tour and gain some magnificent views of the surrounding city. If you don't want to walk the grounds, sign up for a Segway tour with a guide. Plan your visit to Citadelle (Citadel) and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Namur trip itinerary builder.

  • Nice view of the city. but the place is a bit isolated. Too awkward walking with stroller ...

  • One of my favorite citadel that I visit each year. It has a beautiful view on city Namur. There is also tourist train with auto-guide to tell you history of this location and when what happened. You may walk yourself also if you have map. There are small shops and resto for food & drinks. Parking is free and that help you to spend entire day exploring this fantastic place.
  • Must go to in Namur. The position of the Citadel atop the hill overviewing the meeting of the two rivers (Sambre et Meuse) gives one of the most beautiful vantage points I've seen in cities. The history of the place is very intriguing, too. Definitely recommended.

  • Probably the most notorious landmark of Namur. A former military fortress, it is now peaceful place full of stairs, bridges, stairs and forest paths. Go there to take a hike, discover each cranny and nook or simply enjoy a picnic. The place is also perfect for all-terrain biking. You can also observe the historical military architecture, with barracks, arsenals, gates and fortifications. You will also be able to enjoy a stunning vista of Namur and surroundings. Make sure to follow the safety information.
  • The tour of the underground sections of the Citadel is well worth the price.
