Mundaneum, Mons

#6 of 13 in Museums in Mons
The Mundaneum is a non profit organisation based in Mons, Belgium that runs an exhibition space, website and archive which celebrate the legacy of the original Mundaneum established by Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine in the early twentieth century.HistoryThe Mundaneum was created in 1910, following an initiative begun in 1895 by Belgian lawyers Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine, as part of their work on documentation science. Otlet first called it the Palais Mondial, meaning "world palace" in English, and it occupied the left wing of the Palais du Cinquantenaire, a government building in Brussels. It aimed to gather together all the world's knowledge and classify it according to a system they developed called the Universal Decimal Classification. Otlet and La Fontaine organized an International Conference of International Associations which was the origin of the Union of International Associations (UIA).The Mundaneum has been identified as a milestone in the history of data collection and management, and (somewhat more tenuously) as a precursor to the internet.Otlet regarded the project as the centrepiece of a new 'world city'—a centrepiece which eventually became an archive with more than 12 million index cards and documents. Some consider it a forerunner of the Internet (or, perhaps more appropriately, of systematic knowledge projects such as Wikipedia and WolframAlpha) and Otlet himself had dreams that one day, somehow, all the information he collected could be accessed by people from the comfort of their own homes.

  • Peculiar place. Google avant la lettre. Not immediately go to special but well worth it if you're in the area, also thanks to the temporary exhibitions, in our case about Cryptography.

  • Visit the Mundaneum, the presence of Google is better understood in Mons. And the temporary exhibition on Cryptography lacks neither interest nor appeal as the building itself, a workshop Art deco on 3 levels that is reminiscent of the Belgian centre of comics in Brussels.

  • The exhibition visited on the occasion of the first Sunday of the month. The place is very nice, on several levels we can quickly have an overview on what awaits us and this arouses curiosity. We discovered the 'Top Secret' expo that left us a little on our hunger. Very interesting anyway, we have discovered something very interesting about the different methods of encryption or decryption. Exposure that leads to reflection through small puzzles, but we would have liked more. Despite this, we had the feeling that was missing a little more exposure.

  • A good example of a collection, theme and museum that could be most informative, impressive (in it's ideas) but... is not! Such a shame that the heritage of Otlet and La Fontaine has not been promoted and explained more in this museum. Museum is not signposted. Other tourist attractions in Mons (Bergen) are. During our visit there was a Cryptography exhibition. Nice but not special. This exhibition took over the two upper floors. No info could be found about the collection, its founders or its philosophy (world peace through good accessibility of information) . We finally bought a booklet and found info in there. Absolutely awful and noisy was the streetdance festival in the central atrium of the museum. Loud music and cheering during our total visit. We travelled 250 km's to visit this museum. Does this museum or it's owners know what they want with the gold they have in their hands?
  • Really nice
  • Interesting museum, where history leads to knowledge.
  • The staff is friendly and Nice. This month there is an exhibition on Cryptography. There is a free game on the bottom of the Museum and the rest is paid. She is on the 2nd floor. There is a copy of enigma as well as many other machines to encode or decode. Exhibition very interesting and there is a small shop at the end.

  • Tour around crypto was interesting. Mundaneum in itself is intriguing, how one set up the forerunner of Google via a classification system. Beautiful that one this.
