Grand Place, Mons

4.2
#1 of 22 in Things to do in Mons
Shop, eat, and people-watch at Grand Place, the main square of Mons. It is marked by a belfry whose copper has turned green with oxidation. The buildings touch each other and form a barrier around the perimeter of the cobbled square. Sit down at one of the many restaurants and cafes; see if you can find an open table on one of the terraces, which is a good spot to take in the buzz of activity. You'll also find a variety of chocolate shops and boutiques filling the ground floors of the buildings. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Mons holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Grand Place and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

The main square of Mons is located in the center of the historic district of the city. She is not as broad as that of Tournai, but like the last it is bounded by many bars and restaurants. It is paved and on the side there is a jet of water. There are many opportunities for free parking at 5 minutes walk. We had lunch at the "Copenhagen Tavern" located on the grand place and we were pleasantly surprised (which is rarely the case in Belgium) by the excellent price of our meal.

The grand'place is the essential place of the Mons city. With its historical façades and its City Hall, which is also celebrated weddings, it's a place full of stories and legends. For all of the local youth, it is also a meeting point (you'll see people often expect and find themselves in front of the little monkey). At all seasons, there is something to discover (shows, concerts, salsas, markets for flowers, weihnachtsmarkt with rink...) without forgetting the famous and famous battle of the Lumecon during the Ducasse de Mons! The cafés and bars offer environments varied suitable for all audiences. From this central location, it is very easy to access all areas of the city on foot in 10 minutes.

The place is beautiful, but not so nice as in many other cities in Belgium. Less pompous and unfortunately also with car traffic. The Fontaine is very nice for this and there are many restaurants. Unfortunately because of the soil for the disabled an ordeal.

Cute little square, nice shops around it.

Magnificent square which reminds the architecture of Flemish cities and that Belgian was once divided in 2, but vertically.

Where to stay in Mons

Despite its close proximity to the capital, Mons attracts enough visitors in its own right to offer a small variety of accommodation options. You'll find mostly small, independent hotels clustered in the compact city center and, if you look carefully, a modest selection of low-budget lodgings. To cut costs, consider staying in Brussels and making the short trip by train for the day.
