Chateau de Modave, Modave
(4.3/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
The Château of Modave, also known as the Château des Comtes de Marchin is a château near the village of Modave in the province of Liège, Belgium.HistoryThe oldest part of the building, the donjon, was built on a strategic rock high above the valley of the river Hoyoux. The oldest parts still visible today date probably from the 13th century and were erected by the lords of Modave. In the 16th century the castle and the estate of Modave became the property of the Haultepenne and de Saint-Fontaine families. In the next century Jean-Gaspard-Ferdinand de Marchin (1601–1673), a great military commander, acquired the castle and turned it from a medieval fortress into a luxury Baroque residence. His son Ferdinand de Marsin neglected the property and lived in France.Later owners were successively: Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, Elector of Cologne and Prince-Bishop of Liège (1682–1684); Cardinal William Egon of Furstenberg, and his heirs (1684–1706); Baron Arnold de Ville (1706–1772); and Anne-Léon, Duke of Montmorency, and his heirs (1772–1817). In the 19th century it was owned by the non-noble families of Lamarche, Braconier and Van Hoegaerden. Finally, the Compagnie Intercommunale Bruxelloise des Eaux ("Brussels Intercommunal Water Company") bought the property in March 1941, in order to protect the important water catchments in the park. The company still owns the château today and has been restoring it with great care. It is open for visitors from April until October and it is also used as a prestigious venue for concerts and receptions.

  • Every Sunday afternoon, the castle of Modave not far from Namur in Belgium organizes the noon a GREAT brunch buffet at will and we went there for the first time this Sunday, December 11. What a meal! First of all, sparkling aperitif at will of good quality. We were both at our table and we received a bottle of white wine + a bottle of red wine + a bottle of water and then cold buffet, fish or meat / veggies in all kind and in quantity. Then buffet hot meat/fish vegetables sauces etc. Then buffet of cheese + bread. Then buffet of desserts with coffee or tea. All this for € 65.00 per person. But attention, usually is only 55.00 per person. Here we had offered and more used to the foie gras and a wagon load of oysters to the holiday year. All this WILL A very nice, plenty of room, excellent service etc. In short, a great time in this place had nature. You can finish your after noon by the visit of the Castle and then the cafeteria waiting for you. The summer terrace is at your disposal. You obviously need to book and we definitely FAULT. Go ahead! You won't believe your eyes!

  • Chilly weekend in Belgium, so we chose to visiet a castle and pus have wear our choice of Modave. It must be said that on the site, we we had right to discounts, so... Nice discovery, a castle nestled in a beautiful park with a small hike of 7 kilometers in the vicinity of the Castle, we didn't have not made because of the weather but Yes will return of sunny days. Very good host with a smiling young girl and l listen. The price includes a small audio guide handy, you point numbers places throughout the visit, and they tell you the history of this beautiful castle. What is practical is that if you are not interested in a room, you can skip the description and move on to the next without worries. The visit will show you a couple of pieces, very well restored and preserved. A short tour through the sub soil to discover the kitchens or the system water (very interesting) with a small video to close smoothly. A good hour and a half visit to the only Castle.

  • Despite the administrative side that leaves a bit to be desired (they had planted their computer and gave us a room that we had not requested, we only knew it the next day), the setting is splendid, the castle's majestic and is the ideal base for a few beautiful walks. The breakfast was average.

  • No service pathetic! Waited an hour to get into our room after making a reservation. Off to a really bad start seems Ibis may be a better alternative.
  • Very nice place for a wedding, with a nice bathroom and a stage for the DJ. The possibility of brunch the next morning is perfect before a stroll in the forest.

  • Via google Ardennes day trip found is beyond expectations and better than expected. We have not visited the domain we are driving in the driveway and have free valet parking. The restaurant was for our purposes too pricey. The tour by the castle was more than worth it. You walk through rooms where time has stood still. To the menu cards from then.
