Chateau de Modave, Modave

(4.5/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
The Château of Modave, also known as the Château des Comtes de Marchin is a château near the village of Modave in the province of Liège, Belgium.HistoryThe oldest part of the building, the donjon, was built on a strategic rock high above the valley of the river Hoyoux. The oldest parts still visible today date probably from the 13th century and were erected by the lords of Modave. In the 16th century the castle and the estate of Modave became the property of the Haultepenne and de Saint-Fontaine families. In the next century Jean-Gaspard-Ferdinand de Marchin (1601–1673), a great military commander, acquired the castle and turned it from a medieval fortress into a luxury Baroque residence. His son Ferdinand de Marsin neglected the property and lived in France.Later owners were successively: Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, Elector of Cologne and Prince-Bishop of Liège (1682–1684); Cardinal William Egon of Furstenberg, and his heirs (1684–1706); Baron Arnold de Ville (1706–1772); and Anne-Léon, Duke of Montmorency, and his heirs (1772–1817). In the 19th century it was owned by the non-noble families of Lamarche, Braconier and Van Hoegaerden. Finally, the Compagnie Intercommunale Bruxelloise des Eaux ("Brussels Intercommunal Water Company") bought the property in March 1941, in order to protect the important water catchments in the park. The company still owns the château today and has been restoring it with great care. It is open for visitors from April until October and it is also used as a prestigious venue for concerts and receptions.

  • The origins of the castle is a 13th-century castle now is was rebuilt in the 17th century. Nice interior furnishings is a small castle, but was a nice Castle. It is because Japan-language audio guide could explore in turn visited on the tour, but good location at your own pace. Remained in the impression was then room dining room, tapestry-hung Marchand House carved into the ceiling of the Salon first visited coat of arms and family tree. Small was a nice Castle.

  • It's always with pleasure that we return, either as a couple or with friends at the Sunday brunch. We have my wife and I were once more enchanted buffets both quality and diversity. Always quality and especially very friendly service. Thanks also for the welcome which is reserved for the customer. Even if we know the environment we always love to come back for beautiful markets in the vicinity of the Castle. We will return soon. Guy Simonet

  • Visited in winter, the Park and the terraces have certainly not show all their potential. But the castle is still beautiful. Come to see a temporary exhibition, I first was surprised and disappointed by the audioguide that wouldn't talk to me this one., but the Castle, its successive owners. I didn't come to it and my girls (13-15 years) either. But since we were there... listen... And well, the disappointment didn't last. The history of this castle, its interior architecture is told brilliantly. My most young even listened to several additional info (upon request). In the end, a very interesting visit and never boring. Kudos to the developers!
