Coteaux de la Citadelle, Liege

(4.6/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Take an exploratory walking tour of the most scenic part of the city at Coteaux de la Citadelle, which offers five different routes meandering past courtyards, terraces, historic homes, and vantage points. Pick up a map of the routes from the tourist office in the city center; this is the best way to find the beginning of the walkways, since they are hidden from view in certain spots. At some point in all the routes the pathways lead you behind buildings, down alleys, and through open spaces, making the walking tour feel like a treasure hunt. Part of one of the pathways requires you to climb steep steps at Montagne de Bueren. Be sure to don your best walking shoes to keep your feet comfortable on this city adventure. • Liege native, I might surprise you but, ten years ago, I never even suspected the existence of this little corner of countryside in the heart of my town. I discovered it by chance and since then, I go back regularly because it's simply stunning. The slopes of the Citadel offer you amazing surprises. Tip If you're visiting: climb to the Citadel (the 71 bus will take you there in a few minutes from the place St. Lambert). Here, take a few moments to get to the enclosure of the shot, reminiscent of the dark days of German occupation and that is full of emotion and recollection. Then, come back down toward the Center by following the trail of Favechamps. It is signposted and nestles in the corner of a street. There, a small cornice narrow and lined with greenery takes you into another world! A true prairie where graze quietly a few cows, around trees and hawthorns. We are in the city centre and yet you hear more noise from the cars. What healing! What an incredible experience! Along the walk, you will pass by the cow farm and her community, beautiful garden in summer. Join the stony Street and borrow a few hundred meters lower, another trail which will take you on the small terrace, overlooking the Palace of the Prince-Bishops. Great place to relax. Ideal for a little stroll, read a book or simply enjoy the serenity of the place. Return to the Street outside castle through a small wood and a few narrow streets to the steep stairs. You end up at the foot of the mountain Bueren and its 374 markets. If you have the courage to climb, you will be rewarded by a wonderful view of downtown and the Meuse. Finally, explore the many alleyways, impasses and alleys of the neighborhood outside Castle, who have an old-fashioned and romantic charm. Many other discoveries and walks await you in this essential part of our beautiful city. For completeness, you should know that every year the first Saturday in October, is held the night of hillsides, where night-time walks, lit by candlelight and animated by many street artists, immerse you in a very special atmosphere, even if it must be recognized that this event is a victim of its success and that the crowds that press is sometimes very oppressive.
