Groot Begijnhof, Leuven
(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Wander the completely restored historic district at Groot Begijnhof, now used by the local university as housing and classrooms. Made up of 12 cobbled streets cutting through rows of brick buildings, the area is popular for walking tours that allow you to admire the dormers, gables, and statuary decorating the buildings. A Gothic church is the neighborhood's centerpiece--go inside to see the 14th-century murals revealed during a 1980s restoration project. Keep your camera ready for the views from the many canal bridges that cross the waterways into the district, and to capture images of some of the 300 buildings. • If you visit Leuven, the Begijnhof is a MUST to see. A great walk to experience the quietness and history of the site. It's not big, but you need to spend a bit of time to get the emotion flowing trou...  more »
  • You go to Leuven, then you should see this place go, indescribably beautiful! So much fun to imagine how they have lived at that time and how this place still is inhabited! Would like to like to live there.

  • The Grand Béguinage of Leuven, also known as Begijnhof Ten Hove, is a well preserved and fully restored historic area of a dozen streets in the South of the town, located on the Sheep Street, not far from the Porte de Namur. It is one of the largest still existing beguinages in Flanders Is a Unesco World Heritage site since 1998. A must see.

  • To die for. If you've never been to a "hof" (or beguinage) you'll be spoiled by this one. The Grote Begijnhof feels like a charming little village and reminds me of the colleges in Cambridge. I love it, I hope you will too!
  • Very peaceful location. Very clean and beautiful. Perfect to take a little rest and catch some sun if the weather allows it!
  • Really amazing part of Leuven, it is one of the biggest Begijnhof's in the world, it is a Unesco inheritance, roam through the beautiful cobblestone streets, an admire the ancient buildings, where the nuns and priests used to live, you will find a beautiful Gothic church inside the Begijnhof, small bridges that go over the river De Dijle, lots of old water wells and a water pump, there is an old side which is called the Spanish Quarter, you can go here for a beautiful picnic, I really love this place, it is amazing!
  • Don't skip this if you visit Leuven. Very quiet and atmospheric place to walk. The university owns it and restored it to its former glory. It used to be a beguinage but now foreign students and visiting professors are housed there. It's probably and of the biggest and best preserved beguinages left in the world.
  • Historic, yet peaceful place. Highly recommend it. Usually there are not too many tourists around. Great to slow down your trip a bit.
