Groot Begijnhof, Leuven

4.7
Wander the completely restored historic district at Groot Begijnhof, now used by the local university as housing and classrooms. Made up of 12 cobbled streets cutting through rows of brick buildings, the area is popular for walking tours that allow you to admire the dormers, gables, and statuary decorating the buildings. A Gothic church is the neighborhood's centerpiece--go inside to see the 14th-century murals revealed during a 1980s restoration project. Keep your camera ready for the views from the many canal bridges that cross the waterways into the district, and to capture images of some of the 300 buildings. • If you can afford at the time, but I think not many tourists go to Ruben please please stop by. Middle Ages monastery remain whole, you can walk around freely. Many of the buildings are used as Leuven University official residence the flavor of life. Very comfortable sense of atmosphere of unique stone and brick building, surrounded by medieval air. Such a place was rarely, and not like. I think it's interesting to explore college town atmosphere is a little walk from the Leuven train station.

  • We came here during a city walk along and were amazed by how beautiful and big this and Lake was. Is actually a whole village with many beautiful old buildings. Is well maintained and is very nice to walk on through.

  • Beautiful location. Pick a nice and sunny day for pictures. Super cool!
  • The Groot Begijnhof in Leuven is a very large, beautifully preserved beguinage. It has been restored in it's original state. The river Dijle runs through it. Several bridges connect the different parts of the beguinage, making it a wonderful place to stroll around. Must see!
  • A wonderful straight out of fairy tales place. It is not very suitable for wheelchair access due to its cobblestoned streets.
  • Must see in Leuven! It's a small walk from the city centre (old market) by foot and it is remarkably quiet. Once a year (about 2-3 weeks before Christmas) they light the whole site with candles which is a unique experience!
  • A beautiful little district in the city of Leuven. It have a very peaceful and quiet feeling walking between these old houses owned by them bigings in the past. These houses become part of the UNESCO world haritige and they are owned by the KU Leuven university currently. I can recommend this place place for a walk for everyone.
