Groot Begijnhof, Leuven

#2 of 29 in Things to do in Leuven
Architectural Building Historic Site
Wander the completely restored historic district at Groot Begijnhof, now used by the local university as housing and classrooms. Made up of 12 cobbled streets cutting through rows of brick buildings, the area is popular for walking tours that allow you to admire the dormers, gables, and statuary decorating the buildings. A Gothic church is the neighborhood's centerpiece--go inside to see the 14th-century murals revealed during a 1980s restoration project. Keep your camera ready for the views from the many canal bridges that cross the waterways into the district, and to capture images of some of the 300 buildings. • Particular, so everything is authentic. Apart from the Church can you no buildings in, but that doesn't make the visit easier again.

  • Beautiful old Beguinage well maintained. Very worthwhile to walk through. There is a soothing sleep. If there is time enough, just take a seat on a bench to make everything extra good.

  • Fantastic place, feels like in the 16 century. Very well restored by KU leuven.
  • Amazing experience to walk through. I had the privilege of staying for three months. Enjoyed every moment. Mysterious looking lights at night, which takes one to a different era. Wonderful church. Cobblestones are something else to get used. despite lot students, kept very clean. Quite place to meditate. A must for Leuven visitors. So much history behind the place. Loved it and would go back. A UNESCO Heritage site.
  • Such a peaceful place to wander through. Absolutely beautiful. You must see for yourself!
  • Looking for a relaxing walk amongst Leuven's most historical buildings, look no further! In December and January, Christmas lights brighten up the trees and roads. Just remember to keep the peace in this residence area for Leuven professors and staff.
  • a great place to walk around. I would comeback just for photography. I wish they had some minimum information dest though. no bathroom either.
