Sanctuary Wood, Ieper (Ypres)

(1.7/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Honoring the Canadian troops who fought at Ypres Salient in World War I, Sanctuary Wood marks the spot where the troops executed their first planned offensive against German troops. During the attack the Canadians regained territory at the top of the hill, denying the German troops a view of Ypres. Located just outside the city, terraced gardens lead up to the a gray stone block that bears the Canadian insignia. Walk up to the monument for an excellent view over the town and the landscaped gardens. • You can walk through the trenches where soldiers from WW1 stood. The small museum contains interesting exhibits and the cafe serves both tea and alcohol. Small souveniers are available.
  • I walked round sanctuary wood as the pashendaele museum was closed, it made me feel very strange because of the things that i had read about this place during world war 1.
  • The remaining trenches are well worth a visit. The Museum, however, is a bit of a scrap yard where they should have read a lot before in order to understand what they see.

  • This is an incredible experience. The collection of WWI artifacts, war art and trenches is simply amazing. The family and this museum is truly a credit to our remembrance of the First World War. Thank you for providing such an unforgettable experience. My students from years past still rave about visiting this site.
