Sanctuary Wood, Ieper (Ypres)
(1.7/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Honoring the Canadian troops who fought at Ypres Salient in World War I, Sanctuary Wood marks the spot where the troops executed their first planned offensive against German troops. During the attack the Canadians regained territory at the top of the hill, denying the German troops a view of Ypres. Located just outside the city, terraced gardens lead up to the a gray stone block that bears the Canadian insignia. Walk up to the monument for an excellent view over the town and the landscaped gardens. • There is a lot to see and do here, but the main attraction is the authentic trenches which really bring to life what it must have been like 100 years ago.

  • This is an incredible experience. The collection of WWI artifacts, war art and trenches is simply amazing. The family and this museum is truly a credit to our remembrance of the First World War. Thank you for providing such an unforgettable experience. My students from years past still rave about visiting this site.
