Not to be confused with the cathedral in Haarlem, NetherlandsThe Saint Bavo Cathedral (also known as Sint-Baafs Cathedral, or in Dutch Sint Baafskathedraal) an 89m-tall Gothic cathedral in Ghent, Belgium. It is the seat of the diocese of Ghent. It is named for Saint Bavo of Ghent.DescriptionThe building is built on the site of the former Chapel of St. John the Baptist, a primarily wooden construction that was consecrated in 942 by Transmarus, Bishop of Tournai and Noyon. Traces of this original structure are evident in the cathedral's crypt. The chapel was subsequently expanded in the Romanesque style in 1038. Some traces of this phase of expansion are still evident in the present day crypt. In the subsequent period from the 14th through 16th centuries, nearly continuous expansion projects in the Gothic style were executed on the structure. A new choir, radiating chapels, expansions of the transepts, a chapter house, nave aisles and a single tower western section were all added during this period. Construction was considered complete June 7, 1569.

  • The ruins of the medieval abbey set in a small park just a few minutes walk from Dampoort train station. A walk into the past. We saw a good [temporary] photo exhibition inside the old chapel.  more »

  • Welp, this thing is old. Hella old. It's older than the oldest person i know. My grandad, and he is almost 90. It feels sturdy. Ceiling is quite high. It is forth the visit. When i was visited, there was a special stuff going on. It required a fee, so i passed and just looked at the other things.
  • Nice looking cathedral. Not huge. Nice architecture but very typical. Ghent is a very pleasant and picturesque city.
  • Just next to Ghent Belfry, another amazing tower standing at 89 meter tall! The church staff was kind enough to let me take pictures.
  • The cathedral is the oldest of the churches in the middle of Ghent. Truely a marvel to behold inside and out.
  • The Flemisch art at its apogee. The sculptures are just absolutely alive and superb.
