  • Modern building in a historical setting. Much talked about building. In the beginning were all of Ghent against it. Pleasant place where many activities take place. Certainly an added value for Ghent.

  • This is a building with mixed opinions. I sort of like the design, but it's way too big and doesn't really fit in with the rest of the architecture. But there are a lot of activities that take place u...  more »
  • Many advocates have made way for a majority to opponents. Concept is nice, execution is bit of a missed opportunity

  • Others have said that it sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the old buildings but I didn't notice that at the time; I just thought it was a great market venue and its being modern didn't jarr with me at all. The market itself was great with lots of food sellers in particular. Of course, the old town is beautiful and the buildings are charming. Ghent is a delightful city.
  • Sticks out like a sore thumb between the historic building surrounding it. But I have to admit they hold some great events here. I'll never forget the mardi Grass during the festival of ghent!!!
  • The building created controversy when raised. Very modern design with wood and concrete. However it really fits well in the medieval area and reminds clearly of the covered market placed from past time. Acoustic is quite good: public pianos, choirs or violinists will make good use of it.
  • Such an ugly modern building in the middle of a historical square with all these pretty historical buildings around it. They could have made something that would have fit better on such a place.
  • Controversial building at first. Modern, spacious construction that looks great. Fits in great with the old buildings.

Where to stay in Ghent

One of Belgium's main cities, Ghent offers a good variety of places to stay. Because of its proximity to the capital city of Brussels and the city of Bruges, Ghent has fewer options than one might expect for a city of its size. Locals recommend booking a room in advance. The city has options for travelers on any budget, from inexpensive hostels to pricier hotels, with most visitors choosing to stay within the historical center. Prices drop slightly as you move away from the Old Town.
